cache setup - help!

Featured Replies

Maybe someone from the community can help me set up a cache. I am using Unraid 7, the M.2 is already installed and it appears under “Unassigned devices”. What would be the next step?
I have already tried many instructions, but they all come to a point where it doesn't go any further. Usually the menu item described does not exist or the button is missing etc.
I have already tried to assign the M.2 to a pool, but I cannot assign this pool cache to the shares. I am really grateful for any advice.
Please have a look at my Main screen in the attachment.

Push the Add Pool button

Thank you, and what do I do if I have a pool cache? Should it be possible to assign it to a share? I already tried that, but the option was missing. Maybe I looked in the wrong spot.

Once you have pool set up (name can be anything) then if you want to use it for caching a share go to that share on the Shares tab and set the pool as Primary Storage, the array as Secondary storage and mover direction as Pool->Array.

YES! It works! Thanks a lot for your great help!
Most of the instructions on the Internet are pure garbage. That's why I'm glad to find such professional people here.

Have you looked at the online documentation accessible via the ‘Manual’ link at the bottom of the GUI or the DOCS link at the top of each forum page. The Unraid OS->Manual section in particular covers most features of the current Unraid release.

Yes, I read the Storage Management chapter, but unfortunately there was no step-by-step explanation of how to do it.
Other sites have suggested adding the cache to the array. There should be a plus sign next to the device to add the M.2 to the array. Pretty confusing 😄 .
In my desperation I even asked Copilot and Gemini, but they didn't come up with anything useful either. That's why the forum was my last resort.

mover direction as Pool->Array

If you intend to run Dockers/VMs, the related shares ideally would stay on cache or other pool and not be moved to the array.

If you need help with that post diagnostics.

Many thanks for the tip! I assume they run much faster in the cache. I hope Docker is using some RAM, because I put 32 GB in the server. Unraid is only using 1 GB so far though.

Specifically, appdata, domains, system shares.

Not only will that improve Docker/VM performance, it will also allow array disks to spin down since these files are always open.

Nothing can move open files, so after setting those shares to move array->cache, you have to disable Docker and VM Manager in Settings before running mover.

You can see how much of each disk or pool is used by each share by clicking Compute... for the share on the User Shares page.

That sounds really great! I'll have to look into Dockers more, especially as Unraid doesn't offer nearly the range of functions than Synology does. That's why you probably have to add a lot of functions via Dockers or apps. Unfortunately, I don't have much experience with Linux scripts and don't want to delve into that. I hope that Unraid will continue to be developed over time and that some nice functions will be added.

Are you sure? You've barely started learning.

Have you installed Community Applications yet? Lots of plugins and dockers available.

You can also browse the Apps here:

You're right that I haven't gotten deep into the system yet. At least I now have all the settings I want. Thanks for the tip about the community apps! Next I will install MariaDB to be able to connect Kodi.
