Unraid Server Stopped Booting

Featured Replies

Hello,

my unraid server has stopped working, first i recognized i could not get to the WebUI.
After restarting i recognized there was a problem as the WebUI worked again and the array was not started,
also the cache pool was without any drives, adding one and then clicking on 2 broke the WebUI (it just stopped updating),
and after that i could not get the array up for a parity check. This really sucks, what is the troubleshooting way for a situation like this? I use the latest Unraid Stable (7.0) and am always updating plugins, as i mentioned the system booted just fine for several days now (i had it moved recently to a new hardware).

Attached you can find my diagnostics file, as i found in the forum a description mentioning this should be provided with such an troubleshooting help request.

I hope someone will know this and can advise what steps i should take next.

Kind regards,

The pool devices are not assigned, you must assign the pool devices to start the array, or remove the pool.

well as i also explained, i could not, because when i checked if the array was complete (3 x HDDs) which it was, i recognized the Cache Pool was empty, so i added one of my two SSDs which i use as a cache, but when i wanted to switch the Cache Pool size to 2 disks and add my second SSD, the WebUI became unresponsive and was not working anymore, that is exactly my problem, i do not get to do that it seems. So it seems to me the UI might take one or two clicks and update once or twice, but at some point stops working, thats why i posted here to ask if someone knows a way to troubleshoot this.

Reboot in safe mode and try again, if you lose the GUI again, post new diags or at least the syslog:

cp /var/log/syslog /boot/syslog.txt

Hello,

i did start with Unraid in Safe mode (without Plugins but GUI), after two clicks, the WebGUI from Unraid stopped reacting (by the way i left that tab open this time,
instead of opening another one, and it seems to somehow loosing the connection (browser says Unable to connect / using Firefox).

Please find attached the syslog.txt (which i manage to store on my bootdrive before the WebGUI just gave up again ;(

i hope it helps, please let me know in case you need anything else.

syslog.txt

Before the problem, doesn't really help, can you not use the CLI once the WebGUI stops working? If not, enable the syslog server and post that after it happens again.

Hello,

is there a command on the server i can run, to enable the syslog server, or this can only be done via the WebUI?
I am not sure how many clicks that is, and if i will be able to activate it via WebGUI so command line would be prefereable. And once i have it activated,
can you also tell me, what i should copy to the USB /boot then? i mean which file does it create? Or is this also something that is in the WebGUI?

kind regards,

Do you lose the GUI before array start?

  • Author

Hello,

i just activated the syslog server also with the subpoint to copy the syslog to the flash.
lets see.

To answer your last question: yes, i did once, but last time i tried (safe mode boot with gui) i managed to press "Start" the array,
and then lost the response of the WebUI.

If you lose the GUI before array start, there's a serious issue, and possibly hardware related.

Hello,

i am a bit annoyed, it is just working right now, but i have booted it in Secure Booting methog with GUI,
is there any kind of command etc. you would want me to run to analyze it further that could help us to get to the root cause?
Or do i now have to wait for the issue to happen again?

btw. thank you so much for your time and help ;)

I assume safe mode?

You can remove the patch plugin and reboot in normal mode to confirm if that was the problem.

  • Author

yes, safe mode, sorry for the confusion.
interesting, you are mentioning, that, because that came to my mind as well, as i just recently added it.
Anyhow, shouldn't that serve the exact opposit purpose making things even more stable as it fixed things in between main upgrades?

i will try deactivating it as you suggested.

  • Author

I just checked, the patch plugin is already not active, maybe thats the reason indeed it runs stable now.
I will report back, when something goes wrong with the system again (and hopefully the syslog will show something of value then for you).
A question meanwhile are there any commands and or suggestions, what i could run and or should do? e.g. reboot in normal mode now?

kind regards,

I confused your thread with another one, where the user thought that was the problem, you can still test, and same for the other plugins, if it works in safe mode, since plugins are not loaded.

Hello,

so do you think it could be the plugins or not? A question. when i started in Safe Mode without Plugins, did that deactivate the plugins also for the "normal Start" and i have to readd them again from scratch, or will the plugins there still be active? I mean if potentially they are the rootcause of the problem, then it would be nice to know, how to remove the plugins from the normal boot. Can you explain, how i could accomplish that please?

If it works is safe mode and not in normal mode, that's usually a plugin issue.

They will still be active if you boot in normal mode

Easiest way is to rename the relevant .plg files in the 'config' folder on the flash drive to have a different file extension and then reboot.  You can reactivate a plugin later by renaming it back and rebooting.

Hello,

thank you guys, i have just renamed two files related to this new patch plugin (that supposedly should provide important patches between main upgrades of unraid versions) and after following your recommendation, of renaming these .plg files, now the Unraid WebGUI is responding again. I still have the syslog active, also with copy on the flash drive therefore i would say lets close this for now and if it returns, i will refer to this post and provid the syslog details there too, but i hope its fixed now.

Thank you very much for your help ;-)
