Windows 11 loss of GUI access & share access

Featured Replies

Two days ago I lost all access to my server's local network gui and share for my windows 11 machine. No changes to either the server or windows 11 machine were made prior to the loss. The server is working fine, and I can access it from both a windows 10 machine and my cell phone when connected to my local network. I can't ping the server from the windows 11 machine or from the server side either.

So far I've tried the following:

  • Fresh windows 11 install
  • Confirmed both machines are on the same network
  • Tried connecting with both http:// followed by the local IP address and also Tower.local
  • Confirmed my wifi is set to private network
  • I have tired to turn off the network firewall for private and domain networks
  • Confirmed Advanced Network Setting is on for private networks
  • I have followed a guide to disable SMB signing as well.

At this point I am at a loss. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Are you trying to access a public share?

  • Author

Yes, the share is set to public, but it's not showing up under the network tab. No luck with the gui either. Here's a screenshot of the windows credentials too. Not sure what I'm missing.

Update: tried downgrading the os from Windows 11 to 10 and still can't see the server on my local network or my shares.

Do you see the server on the network tab but then cannot connect to it can but don't see the shares, or you don't even see the server listed there?

Open up Windows File Explorer/Manager and type    \\{Server_Name}   on the address bar.

If that does not work, try   \\{Server_IP_Address}

Post up the screenshot of any failure with the error message.

Also provide the Version of Windows 11 you are using-- example;  Win11 Pro, ver 23H2.

One more thing, give us the IP addresses of both the server and that Windows computer that won't connect.  (Ask back if you need help finding them.)

Ok currently running windows 10 Pro. Here is both the server IP from my router for the server(matches what my server says in my docker containers under Lan IP:Port, and what I can use on the other machines to connect) and the IP for my windows 10 pro machine that won't connect.

Before I could see the server under my network tab as "Tower", but now it's gone completely. What is weird is that it the server appears in my network tab for my other windows 10 home machine.

One more thing to check.    Open   Control Panel   then click on  Change advance share settings  in the left pane.   Now make sure that   Network discovery   is turned on.

Windows help for this is something that I have always found a bit confusing.  In Windows 11 Pro ver 23H2 it reads like this:

image.png.1f312499919c33acbe3f11802a902db3.png

This explanation is a bit clearer than in earlier versions but why the setting in the first place?  Is it there to allow corporations to prevent the users of the company-owned laptops from being access any server on the road?  What happens when that user comes home to his office?  How is the user to connect to the corporate network there?

Jumping back to Win10 from Win11 may not change settings that are in Windows Registry.   Win10 is not that different from Win11 in the base code and I don't think the old Registry is restored when you revert back to Win10.  It will probably still contain any updates that Win11 put/made there.

Another thing to try.  Open up a   Command Prompt  on the Windows computer and   ping   your Unraid server using both the IP address and the server name.  You should get something like this:

I double checked the network settings, but still the same thing. I couldn't agree more, this update stinks. I was up and running fine for months before this. I tried to ping it as well and it wouldn't go through. Same thing if I try to ping from the server to the windows 10 pro machine that isn't working.

You mentioned have other devices/computers that are working fine.  Get the IP addresses of those devices (It may be quick to look on your modem for these) and try to ping them from your server and the 'problem' computer.  Also try to ping the 'problem' computer from those 'working' devices.

Ok both PCs can ping each other. I appreciate your help troubleshooting this too. Seems like this is an odd ball issue for sure.

Ping to working PC.PNG

Open the Unraid server's  GUI Terminal and see if you can  ping   the 'problem' computer.

  • Author

Ok tried that and it does nothing it just says, "PING 192.168.1.216 56(84) bytes of data." but then it doesn't do anything further. The terminal is the unresponsive like it's frozen. If I exit the terminal then re-open and try to ping another random address like 192.168.127, it says destination host unreachable.

Try googling   how to enable ping in windows 11   There are a number of suggestions from that query line.

If you don't find something that way, try changing the way you ask google the question...

Beyond that suggestion, I am at a complete loss as to how to proceed from here!

EDIT:  One more thought (and this is a wild one), if you are running anti-virus software other than Windows Defender, check its settings.

As a last resort I installed Tailscale to my server and was able to connect that way for anyone else having this problem. No idea how to fix the local network issue though. Thank you Frank for all your help.

This 'problem' computer isn't connected via WIFI and, perhaps, using a 'Guest' WIFI network?
