February 24, 20251 yr Hi All, I have a 5 disk (4+1 parity) setup in my unraid box. Disk 1 just failed. I've purchased two new drives (larger so upgrading parity + the failed disk). What's the correct way to do this? I'm imaging I replace disk 1 first, let the parity setup write to it, then replace the parity one so that I can fully utilize the space from disk 1's increase? That's the only thing that makes logical sense but want to confirm. Crossing fingers my other drives last 4 days Thanks!
February 24, 20251 yr Community Expert Solution No, what you describe will not work as no data drive can ever be larger than the smallest parity drive. What you want is the Parity Swap procedure that allows you to replace the parity drive with a larger one, and as part of the same process then use the old parity drive to replace failed drive. Once you have done that you can use the standard disk replacement process to upgrade any of the data drives using the other new drive, or (if you have a free SATA slot) add it as an additional drive.

Luckily, I just got notice that two drives will be here tomorrow so I basically need 24 more hours.
