Share is outside the list of designated disks, settings all wonky

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I had Share 1 > disk 1 and share 2 > disk 2. I wanted to end up with share 2 > disk 1 +2.

I changed the settings for share 2 to also include disk 1. For share 2 now I get the message "share is outside the list of of designated disks" when pressing the compute / compute all buttons.

If I now click on Share 2 to go to the settings page, the settings are all confused - the included / excluded disks section is showing twice, I cannot change the included disks for that share, and the settings do not correspond to the setting titles.

How do I go about resolving this? Basically I want to delete share 1 and keep share 2 across both disks, but I can't delete share 1 because it contains data. How do I get the data from share 1 into share 2 across both disks so I can delete share 1 (the data is already where it needs to be on the physical disks). Can I unassociate the data with the user shares so I can delete them and create a new one that goes to disk 1+2 for any new files? Hopefully the solution won't involve having to move any data from the disks where it currently resides.

Thanks for any help

That looks like a browser problem. Which browser? Do you have adblockers or anything else that might interfere?

I believe it's a bug, it can happen in extreme corner cases, IIRC, the last time I saw it, the user had a share to include only one disk, and that disk was no longer part of the array.

Last night I transferred all the data out of share 2 to a disk outside of the server. When I look inside the share folder under /mnt/user/share2 using MC it shows it's empty (I made sure that show hidden files was on). Share 2 was set to use disk 2.

On the MAIN tab, disk 2 still shows that ~28GB is used:

I stopped the array, disabled user shares and enabled disk shares so I could check the disk 2 contents and again, both in MC and on the windows client, show no files.

Any ideas why Unraid is showing ~28GB used on the disk if both the user share that was set to use that disk, and the disk when viewing in MC are both empty? How can I find out what that 27.9 GB of data is?

That is almost certainly the file system overhead of the data structures to support an empty file system on that drive

Ah yes, now you say that, I remember that a percentage of the drive gets used up for that. So how can I view that / should I be able to see it in MC or is it hidden (but not considered as a "hidden" file)?

I've tried to move some of the data I moved out back to an existing share, for which I have set the included disks to the two lower ones (2x 4TB) shown in the screenshot above, and have set the allocation method as "Most Free". I assumed that this would move the data into the bottom disk because it is the most free of the two that I've included (this is what I want), but it has transferred the data into the one which already has 2.22TB in it.

Why is it doing that when the allocation method is set to most free?

None of the share settings move anything, except the Mover action setting. The other settings only specify what to do with new files.

Also, Most Free is actually the least efficient method, since it will require changing disks any time the disk already being written temporarily has less free than another disk. Highwater is the default for good reason.

Sorry, what I meant to say was:

with the allocation method set to "Most Free" after clicking the move button I assumed this would move the data....

Looks like I need to use "split only top level directory" in split level settings in order for it to work.

Anyway, Once I've got all my data where I want it on the disks, I'll set it to High water going forwards.

Just to confirm, if I want to manually move data, I can disable user shares and enable disk shares, and then move my data using MC where I want it, and then re-enable User shares. Any data then added to the user share afterwards will work based on the user share settings?

Your assumption is wrong.    The settings only apply to new files.

Regarding Split Level setting this will override the Allocation Method setting in the event of conflict when choosing a drive.

You don't need to enable disk shares. That is only needed to directly access the disks over the network. When using MC, Krusader, command line, or better yet, Dynamix File Manager, you can access disks directly. I recommend NOT enabling disk shares.

If working with MC, Krusader, command line or anything else except Dynamix File Manager, you must not mix disks and user shares when moving/copying files. Linux doesn't know the user shares are just another view of the disks, and so might try to overwrite what it is trying to read.

Dynamix File Manager prevents you from mixing disks and user shares so it is safer.

Thanks for the tips guys! I will use only user shares, Dynamix file manager and high water allocation method going forwards.
