System tools see drive but won't show up

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and currently reviewing unraid with a trial license. But want to purchase it if its functionality checks out. Anyway I see my external nvme enclosure in system devices but i dont see the disks in the main tab.

Any suggestions? Happy to upload my diagnostics.

Thanks in advance...

Do you have a link to this?

I get it.

USB not recommended for assigned disks for many reasons.

Thanks, for the speedy reply but other OS's see both drives, any way to make unraid see them?

I'm not referring to only those drives. Your other drives are also USB

None are assigned yet though.

Are you planning to use Unraid with only USB drives?

Nope i only plan to use the following + the sdb thats not showing up. So 2 internal drives and 2 external drives

And by external drive, do you mean connected with USB? Were you hoping to assign any USB connected drives to the array or pools?

Yes, I was hoping to create one pool with a mix of internal and external drives and another pool with the same for some resilience

Some have had success, many have not. You are already having problems.

USB often disconnects, making array or pool disks out-of-sync, requiring rebuild or other maintenance. Could be a frequent occurrence.

Some USB may not even allow Unraid to reliably keep track of disk assignments.

Some USB may not show the full size of a disk, which can cause problems if trying to use it for parity.

Some USB may not allow Unraid to monitor disk health.

If you insist on USB connections for assigned disks, I usually recommend not trying to have parity for the array. That way nothing can get out-of-sync. Of course, nothing can be rebuilt either.

And single disk pools, so disconnects won't affect other disks.

You should also note that SSD/nvme in the array cannot be trimmed, whether USB or not.

And, USB connection for nvme sort of defeats the purpose of nvme, which normally uses much, much faster PCI connections

Sounds like unraid isn't for me...

Apr 19 16:13:55 Tower emhttpd: device /dev/sdb problem getting id

The problem is that both devices from that enclosure show as with the same name and serial, Unraid requires that all devices have a unique ID, this is a common issue with some USB enclosures, and one of the reasons they are not recommended, but some do work correctly, and there are users using them.
