System Hangs on shutdown or reboot

Featured Replies

Whenever I go to reboot my server, it never completely stops so it never comes back up. I have to hold down the power button to kill it, then turn it back on. I've attached my syslog, any smoking guns in here?

Nothing obvious that I can see in the log, sisable Docker and VM service and reboot in safe mode, start the array and see if it stops, if yes, retest again after booting in normal mode to rule out a plugin issue, leave the services still disabled, if still OK enable one of the services and retest, then the other, note that if the issue happens with the docker service enabled only, you may need to try enabling one or a few containers at a time to find the culprit.

If you keep any terminal connections open or SMB connections unraid might not finish unmounting the disks which may prevent shutdown.

Next time it happens, SSH in and tail the syslog tail -f /var/log/syslog and see what is stuck.

Look for motherboard error codes, and if you can try other OSs to see if they have the same problem, which will show it's not an Unraid issue, but a MB issue. On my Asrock x299 board, I have the same issue, which is a memory issue that becomes severely exacerbated when xhci handoff is enabled. I have the problem in both a separate drive with Windows and UnRaid, so it's not an UnRaid issue. The MB error code helps too.
