Upgraded parity, used old parity to upgrade another disk. Array now has options to rebuild or format disk?

Featured Replies

I am trying to upgrade my parity drive with a larger drive, then use the old parity to upgrade my smallest drive in the array.

Here is what I did:

  1. Upgraded my single parity drive with a larger capacity one

  2. Waited for parity rebuild to finish

  3. Unselected my smallest capacity drive from array

  4. Started array so that disk is emulated

  5. Stopped array

  6. Tried to use my old parity drive in that empty disk. In the process, I had to troubleshoot a bit because the drive required the 3.3v pin fix and then my SATA cable also stopped working.

  7. After I got the old parity drive to be recognized by Unraid, I set it to the disk where I removed the smaller drive.

  8. When I started the array, it said it will start rebuild. I started the array and rebuild automatically started but Unraid is also giving me the option to format the drive since it is "Unmountable: wrong or no file system".

What should I do? I paused the data rebuild for now.

Do you still have the original data disk?

When the emulated disk is unmountable, we usually check filesystem and repair before rebuilding, but if you still have the original disk you have more options for recovery.

I would say: "Don't Panic!"

If it is the old Parity Drive, it is of course unmountable and does not contain any file system.

Let the rebuild finish, it should cure that symptom too.

Should be mountable and contain your old data afterwards.

But may take a long time, be patient.

Note that if the emulated disk is unmountable before or during the rebuild, it will remain unmountable after.

@g6516 please post the diagnostics.

ooh, sorry, i did not see "before". (coffee level too low? gonna fix it fast...)

Of course, if already the emulation fails, there is little to no hope that the rebuild will fix it.
