December 3, 2025Dec 3 Hi Guys,Just wanted to introduce myself.I'm a 40-ish-year RN who does all the tech for family and friends. I have no network experience, aside from self-hosting RustDesk to support my friends and family remotely. I also just put together a home server build recently, which is why I'm here. I had the parts lying around. I'm looking to get more knowledge on how to be more effective with data management and get into the wonderful world of Nextcloud, Immich, Jellyfin, Audiobookself, Calibre, and many others. The server I put together currently has 2 8-Terabyte drives but only 8GB of RAM. Will I need more RAM? I will be searching here extensively, trying to contribute when I can. Some Docker containers let you allocate RAM (and limit the amount) for their use. If you plan to do hardware transcoding in Jellyfin/Emby/Plex, you can do that in RAM and save wear and tear on an SSD. 8GB RAM is the minimum these days for Unraid, but, the uses mentioned above can require more. I have 32GB RAM in my main server and 16GB in the other two. In my main server, I have Plex hardware transcoding in RAM, HDHomeRun TV show recordings using RAM and virtual machines that grab 8GB when running. 32GB is not "too much" for my needs.
