Switching from parity to data

Featured Replies

I currently have three disks in the array with one parity disk. And three disks in the pool.

I would like to use the parity disk as another data disk and move the three disks from the pole to the array, since it will work the same without a parity disk.

What would be the best process to do this?

Thank you.

That's not correct; array disks are independent filesystems, you can move the pool disks to the array, but the pool data will not be imported; all three disks would need to be reformatted

If that's what you want, go to Tools - New Config - Keep Array - Apply, then on Main reassign parity to a data slot and also the previous pools disks, start the array, and format old parity plus the old pool disks.

It should go without saying that, without parity, the array won't be protected against a disk failure.

It doesn't matter the downtime, and I have backups. Thank you.

I don't understand this. I have a series of disks in the pool, each with its own data and its own shares. Can't the data be preserved?

Gracias.

If you mean each disk is on its own pool, then you can move them to the array after the new config and keep their data

made me assume all 3 disks were in the same pool. If that is the case, you cannot move them to the array while keeping the data

It's a pool, but the data isn't distributed. Maybe it's just that I have a weird configuration? I don't quite understand why the data is lost.

Thanks for your messages!

Are you sure? What is the pool filesystem and configuration since you never mentioned it? No pool setting would result in independent drives if they're in the same pool. Detail your setup precisely.

Please post a screenshot of Main with the array started to check the current config

I move files between disks, not between shares. Each file is within its share and is on a single disk.

Thank you for the help.

So they are not "in the pool" which would mean "all of them in the same pool", they're each in separate pools. So yes you should be able to move them to the array as is.

You need to do a "new config" then add them, and that will then rebuild parity.

In other words, it is as if I had 4 pools, right?

Thank you so much.

Correct, single device pools can be moved to the array with a new config.
