Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal $149

Featured Replies

This only has a 1 year warranty btw.  I think I am just going to stick with drives that have 5 year warranties--like the recent one at best buy: the 2tb for $99.

Heck I even got a used wd 2tb for $90 inlcuding shipping from eBay with a manufacturer warranty that ends at the end of 2013--longer than this warranty.

Whats up with a 1 year warranty?  Is this a new trend?

Unfortunately yes, unless you buy a retail box of the drive. The retail box version of this drive has a 5 year warranty.

To my knowledge, there is no "retail version" of this drive (with 1TB platters).

The Barracuda XT 3TB (older model, looks to be discontinued) had a 5 year warranty and the 3TB STBD3000100 (also discontinued?) in the retail box was also downgraded to a 1 year warranty this year. .

Looking at the seagate lineup of drives on their homepage, the current barracuda line is now "bare drive only" with 1 year warranty. They seem to be trying to save even more cash by skipping on retail extras like, no printed box (they come in a factory sealed brown box, not a bare drive) no screws, no cables and no seagate tools CD/s.

For those that did get this drive. update the firmware to the latest version to get rid of both the "chirping" noise it makes and to get rid of the always on activity light.

for some reason the firmware that came with my drives (4C) had the activity light status reversed. light on when idol and light off when busy.

Must have been confusing it with another model. In that case, your best bet is to buy a warranty from it from a place like Square Trade for $15-20 if you're worried about longevity.

sorry was not trying call you out..

I was more trying to point out that the hard drive companies are no longer being competitive with each other and trying give us the shaft without any lube...

No surprise considering there are literally only 3 manufacturers left, and only two of them that are really of any importance.

The only hope is that maybe Toshiba will step it up. WD had to agree to sell some 3.5 drive technology to Toshiba to get the deal to purchase Hitachi approved by the government.

I have 3 of these drives (1 parity, 2 data).

Did not know about a firmware update.

Should I bother or not?

How high is the risk of losing data during the firmware update?

If they are working fine then dont?

Mine had reversed Activity lights.. I would upgrade one at a time and restart your array to test between upgrades. maybe do a parity check after you do one?

I am in the same boat. I have 3 in my server (1 parity and 2 data [along with 15 or so hitachi's]) and 4 outside the server doing preclears now.

I'll probably run a parity check, upgrade my parity disks firmware and run another parity check with correct off.  see what happens.

the windows upgrade utility works nice btw. i put the drives in a win box to upgrade. no need to format them, it just reboots and flashes.
