Kernel Panic On Boot - not syncing VFS: unable to mount root fs

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I had my server up and running for several years, but I have a problem now where it's not booting...

It first happened a few days ago, and when it did I unplugged the USB drive, plugged it to a different port and it did boot up, but now it's happening again...

I just plugged the drive into my PC and it is "working", and I backed up all files (again) just in case.

Is this something I can troubleshoot or is it likely the drive? Should I try formatting it and re-copying the files again (don't remember after so long if there was something else that needed to be done to "prepare" the drive), and lastly should I need to replace the drive, is it still the case these are tied to the drive ID etc, and if so what do I need to do so that my license will still be valid? (I have an old "Pro Key").

Thanks for your help.

Try recreating the flash drive, first backup the current one, then recreate it using the USB tool, confirm the flash drive boots with the stock install, and if yes, restore only the /config folder from the backup overwriting any existing files.

Thanks! This might be a dumb question but I don't remember usingany tool way back then, is it possible it wasn't a thing at the time? Anything to be wary of regarding the version I have on it now vs. the tool? I also had a few dockers setup/configured. Any particular folder to also move over once confirmed the drive works and boots? (if it does).

Traditionally Unraid had a manual process for creating the flash drive, and that still works. Both the tool based and manual one are covered here in the online documentation.

So finally getting to this, but ran into a small pause... The "Issue" is that my server had been running for a looong time without issues, and I never updated. It's version was 6.9.1, and this is not an option with the creator..

Any workaround to getting that same version, or if not any version on the tool that should be "safe" to install anyway? (considering my later config copy to it).

You can try with the latest stable; but it's good to read the release notes for the major releases in between.

Thanks. I decided to play it a little safer and got the last legacy version still listed/available for download, which was 6.11.5, so 2 versions up. It seems to be working correctly for now.

I guess I need to look into proper upgrade to a current version. Any tips for one this old? Also, what is the current trend/recommendation regarding what to use in terms of disks and sizes etc? I built this a long time ago, and it just has "normal" mechanical disks of 3TB each (a total of 15TB usable), which I guess is kinda obsolete by now...

You should be able to upgrade directly to the latest without major issues. It's always good to create a backup before doing so, as well as reading all the release notes for the major releases in between, like 7.0.0, 7.1.0 and 7.2.0
