July 9, 201213 yr Author damnit damnit damnit i just want things to finally work ha ha... Check SMART reports for Disk 1 and Disk 7. Compare these reports with the previous ones for each. Then run a full parity check, to be sure all is well with Disk 1 and Disk 7. ok so ill start some SMART test on disk 1 & 7 but how do i pull up old SMART tests?
July 11, 201213 yr Author here are the SMART results for disk1 & disk7 hope i let them go long enough... SMART.zip
July 11, 201213 yr Serial Number: WD-WCAYY0015730 (currently sdb) has a sector pending reallocation. This disk need to be rebuilt. Rebuild the drive on to itself and then check SMART. If you have a spare drive then replace the drive and rebuild on to the spare. Then you can run pre-clear on WCAYY0015730 and make it the new spare. pre-clear should reallocate the pending sector and any additional that may appear..

July 12, 201213 yr Author i am still waiting for disk1 to finish its preclear then ill run a smart test. however i FINALLY got smarthistory installed (finally because of some stupidity on my part) and im getting some stuff about disk 2 can someone look at the smart results for me thanks!!! smartlongsdc.txt

July 12, 201213 yr Author thanks for looking! got two warnings on the smart history WD-WCAVY0250440: WARNING - Power_On_Hours it is now 24621 (warning threshold is 20000) WD-WCAVY0250440: WARNING - UDMA_CRC_Error_Count it is now 72 (warning threshold is 20)
July 14, 201213 yr Author what do you think i should do? do you think its worth the risk down the road to keep this? if i pre clear it until it fixes it is it more than likely to happen again?
July 14, 201213 yr what do you think i should do? do you think its worth the risk down the road to keep this? if i pre clear it until it fixes it is it more than likely to happen again? The only way to have pending sectors now is if the zeros you wrote were not readable in the post-read phase. All the pending sectors should have been re-allocated, or re-written in place in the writing phase. Since all the sectors were re-written in place, I would suspect you'll keep seeing un-readable sectors. It might even be power supply related... (noisy power supply voltage preventing proper writes from occurring) It is not worth the risk to your data. I'd run it through pre-clear once more. If ANY sectors pending re-allocation exist, RMA THE drive. IF all are re-allocated (Or re-written in place) pre-clear it again. IF you can go through sever cycles of pre-clear with no further un-readable sectors, you might trust the drive. If not, RMA it.
July 14, 201213 yr Author It might even be power supply related... (noisy power supply voltage preventing proper writes from occurring) I have a psu tester http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0U008T4586 cant tell you if its exact model but same brand and looks just like it...will this detect any noise in the PSU that may help us out? If not, RMA it. ill give it a couple more preclears i reckon and post results and let me know what you think...should i pull the preclear results or just do a SMART test after preclear? Joe this is from another drive i have. I posted SMART test on it. i was told was fine but can you tell me what these mean? i saw it in smarthistory... WD-WCAVY0250440: WARNING - Power_On_Hours it is now 24621 (warning threshold is 20000) WD-WCAVY0250440: WARNING - UDMA_CRC_Error_Count it is now 72 (warning threshold is 20) please demote me from a Sr. Member lol i know nothing!
July 15, 201213 yr Author Im running pre clear on disk1 again and for the first time i did it direct from server and not from telnet..this should be identical correct? the reason i ask is because the pre-clear is at 49% PRE-READ with 41:39:29 hours elapsed...this is A LOT longer than it normally took me.. should i start over or just RMA it? thanks!

Without looking at the syslog, you might be RMA'ing the wrong disk.

Without looking at the syslog, you might be RMA'ing the wrong disk. just for my understanding even though i have removed disk1 from the array it could still be affected by other disks? I attached the syslog are you seeing errors in the syslog from that disk? This is the disk that the last pre clear didnt fix and we are going to try a couple more pre-clears and possibly RMA if doesnt do the trick looking through my syslog i see a power failure...we are in monsoon season so the power goes out here and there (; syslog.zip
July 21, 201213 yr Author alright im back...i have run 2 pre-clears on disk 1 (sdb) and ran a long smart test after each...here are the test along with syslog just incase...let me know if is all good or should just RMA it...thanks again! Im going to just RMA the drive tomorrow unless someone sees a reason not to..thanks Tests.zip
August 22, 201213 yr Author had a problem with the RMA process and contacting someong at Western digital so been a while since i posted. I got a new drive and i precleared it 3 times and it was good all 3 times i have attatched a syslog as well as a smart test result on that drive. can you check it out thanks syslog.zip
