Advice with a new server (245K)

Featured Replies

It's served me well, but with Frigate I've seen the limitations of my J4105. It also struggled occasionally with some transcoding in Jellyfin.

So I started looking to upgrade, and at first I was set on a 12600K or something like that, since I'd seen that the UHD770 is good.

But after looking into it further, I thought, and if I want to future-proof my system with AV1, NPU... I think the following components will be good:

Asus Prime Z890M-PLUS WIFI (6 SATA ports)
Intel Core Ultra 5 245K
Corsair Vengeance DDR5 16GB (2x8GB) 5200MHz CL40

What do you think?
Any incompatibilities?

Thank you very much.

Check if anyone has had issues with the MB chipset you're looking at. Same with CPU and Memory.

I just repurposed my 10 year old Dell laptop (Latitude 7390, 8gig ram, i5-8350U cpu, busted screen) to be my Frigate NVR. I'm running 6 cameras (2x 1080, 4x 4K) with a Coral TPU and the Intel UHD620 iGPU. I mapped shares from my Unraid server to the laptop (using NFS) for storage needs. No issues, detections working great, notifications being sent. I had thought about buying something, but thought I'd give this a try. Glad I did, and doubly so, because the iGPU in my server can stay dedicated to Plex.

Thanks for your review.

I discard the Coral option. So I think I need a powerful iGPU, I don't want to buy a processor and find out it falls short.

Thanks for comment!

FYI: The old 12 series CPUs cant encode AV1 - only the new Core Ultra (S1851) can handle this (if transcoding is an option for the future).

So the 245K is the better choice.
