Problem with mapped drives, when on other networks (Tailscale)

Featured Replies

I plan to access my server from another country and I have Tailscale set up, both on Unraid and my Laptop. It all works very well actually, I can access my Unraid like I before but instead of using my local address, I'm using the "ts.net" one to get the HTTPS certificate (that's what a video said to use for secure connection) and I have a bunch of Shares mapped too and they all work fine.

Problem happens when I go somewhere else and use another network...I can access Unraid no problem but the Shares I mapped no longer work and I get a "username/password error" (I type them in correct, it's an obvious error). After some time of getting nowhere I decided to use the "100.xxx.xxx.x" address. And it worked, I can access my shares but isn't that HTTP?

It's good that it works, I just want a simple set up like that but I also wanna have it as secure as possible with HTTPS. My SSH and SSL are enabled.

If someone understands this issue or a setting I may have missed, I'd appreciate any pointers. I'm trying to set this up before I leave my server and I just wanna make sure I can get it to where I'm happy with it or at least understand the issue.

It does work but I just don't get why the mapped "ts.net" address won't work when I'm away from my local network and if it's safe to use the "100.xxx.xxx.x" as I'm trying to set this up last minute.

It's over tailscale it's secure since it's a private network only you control. HTTP or HTTPS the traffic is encrypted through a wireguard tunnel.

It may also be windows being weird with credentials... (assuming you are using windows on the laptop)

Take a look at the credential manager and manually add an entry for the different addresses that you use... I've run into that on a few systems, and found adding a credential for both the numbered address and the dns name helps.

So there's no need to panic if I map shares using Tailscale's IP? Unraid still uses the DNS address. I'm just trying to set it up in a rush...

Possibly. I've had issue mapping drives locally when they just refused to map or un map...but a reboot usually fixes it.

I might have to look into that, not something I'm familiar with tho...I thought you just need the username/password to access the share?

I had them mapped and working when I was on my local network but it's when I took the laptop elsewhere the mapped drives were inaccessible. Unraid I could access fine with the DNS address (HTTPS) but not the shares I mapped. Remapping them using the Tailscale IP (HTTP) fixed it. I was just worried about it being not secure but MowMdown says it's actually secured.

Nope, it's a secure encrypted tunnel. it's a private VPN. The traffic is encrypted between your remote device and the end point (the NAS)

Thanks for putting my mind at ease. Well if that's the case, then the test run was a success and in theory I should have access to my server from anywhere in the world and have it be secure 👍

Just remember to keep that computer secure. A lost/stolen laptop could make gaining access to your files a simple matter...

"lost/stolen" was "stolen"

Yes I noticed Tailscale just runs automatically. I'd really like it not to and to confirm my log in each time but I haven't found a way.

You might want to pursue that issue in this sub-forum:

You only other thing that I would know to do is to use a secure password to log in as the 'user' on the laptop. Not completely foolproof but it will slow things down for 'most' people who might want to access it.

Yeah the device is passworded and I will log out after every session (I won't use it often) it still needs a code sent to another device and then you have to log into your WebGUI.

For the autorun bs I just disabled it with msconfig, don't get why it's not a setting...
