I bought one of these last week from Amazon and took it out of the enclosure and put it in my server as my new parity drive. How does it work for you (fast, cool, etc)? I've had a 3TB parity for a while, but my current data drives are only 1TB each... This would let me double the capacity in one move, until I'm ready to buy a license. -Rick

Surprisingly, it actually runs cooler than my WD Green drives, both 2 and 3TB models. And it's a lot cooler than a 7900rpm 2TB Hitachi from late 2009 that I have in there. I also noticed an increase in speed as well. My old parity drive was a 3TB WD Green. I don't have actual speed figures but moving stuff from my cache drive to the array is definitely faster now. Unfortunately, unlike you, this didn't get me a whole lot more storage room. Even with the additional 3TB I gained by moving my 3TB WD to storage use I still only have ~30% free space left. 9TB used out of 13.3 available.
June 22, 201214 yr The price of a license is not very high compared to the price of new storage, particularly if you opt for the 6 disk license . . . just sayin' They also have it for the same price on Amazon. I've done the math to figure out my $/GB, and it's actually cheaper for now to replace my two 1TB data drives with new 3TB drives, and then when I fill those up, buy the license, at which time I can redeploy the 1TB drives that were bumped. I'm also postponing the license purchase to see how the v5 RC's shake out and if any changes will be made with the licensing model. The way things are looking now, I'll probably just buy the pro license given how many more drives it supports.
