High Fly Write

Featured Replies

How serious is the high fly write error?

As I have noted in a couple other threads I recently installed a ST3000DM001 as my parity drive  It now has 315 hours on it, mostly due to me running 4 preclears, and during that time I think it stayed on for about a week.

I actually posted a thread about some smart results after the preclear and think all the questions I initially asked are good so have marked that complete.

However, I noticed tonight in unMENU it was noting high fly write errors.  I went back and looked at my preclear logs.

After the first preclear, 0 high fly writes with a score of 100

After 3 more preclears, 3 high fly writes with a score of 97

After 5 days in service as a parity drive, it's at 4 high fly writes with a score of 96

So if the score is going down 1 with each high fly write error, the failure threshold is considered, and in a week I have 4 errors.... in about 6 months I'll be down to zero.

Anyone else see this? worry or not?

I have two ST3000DM001 drives in my system which have been in service for two and half months.  Both of them have four (4) High Fly Writes events in the SMART report.  These events happened quite early in their life and the counts have remained stable since that time.

I did a bit of research in an attempt to understand what a "High Fly Write" was and how it effects reliability.  I found some information that I could not comprehend and could draw no real conclusion on the significance of the data.  I decided to simply continue to monitor these drives.  I remain in that mode.  Because one of these drives is the parity drive and the other one is the largest data drive, these two drives see most of the activity on my server.  As far as I can determine, both are functioning flawlessly!

I just put one into service today. I have ran it through 6 preclears and have 3 high fly write. Do you have the latest firmware?

Doesn't look like it.  I have CC4B, you are on CC4H.

Do you know what the firmware updates did?

I guess I will check out Seagates website and see what it takes to do the updates.

I am anal about updates. Of what I read the drive makes a chirp noise, and that the updates is supposed to eliminate it. As a side question have you been able to check the warranty info for the drive on Segates site? I am unable to but all of my Samsung drives I can.

I can't find a place to check on the warranty for their site either.

I just downloaded the firmware update but will probably be a while before I can get to shut everything down and pull the drive.  I don't have a CD drive in my server to boot from.  I may try to copy the files over to a bootable usb drive to see if that will work.
