SSD for laptop (reprise)

Featured Replies

I got a question about a SSD for a laptop that has only place for one drive. Is a hybrid drive a good option?

What are the drawbacks of a hybrid-drive? I read about the Seagates, they are based on SLC NAND flash. Is this bad?

I'm using one. It is faster than a regular HDD but doesn't compare to a flash. Recently I removed the optical drive and installed a SSD. The OS and applications are on the SSD and the hybrid drive contains only the user directory.

I got an SSD for my new laptop..

I removed the optical drive and got a drive caddy that goes into the optical bay for my 500MB mechanical.

but people seem to like the hybrids for single drive systems

I also thought about replacing the optical with a caddy. I hardly use the optical anyhow. Will any caddy do? I have an ASUS laptop. Guess I have to search ebay for that?

It has to be a caddy for the specific model or family of laptop you are using.

I've done the same.

Some machines (convertable tablets) I use SSD internally, hybrid via optical bay.

For my other music related computers I use the hybrid drives internally with great success.

I think about doing the same. Getting the right caddy seems the hardest part. Are those hybrids only available from Seagate? The SSD will be a Crucial M4 or Samsung 830 128 or 256 GB.

Currently Seagate is the only manufacturer making 2.5" hybrids.

As far as caddy, I never had much luck for a decent price outside of eBay.

eBay for these type of caddies has been my best bet unless the machine was not very popular.

Found this one/:

Too bad it takes a couple of weeks from china to netherlands. Just hope it works. Does it matter on which port to put the SSD? SATA2 or SATA3?

If it's a laptop, I'm not sure you can control which port to put it on.

The internal drive is usually the first port, the DVD or caddy is the second port.

As far as port type/speed. Drives are usually backward compatible. (I've yet to find one that wasn't) In any case you want to match port speeds if at all possible to take advantage of the SSD speed.  If your laptop supports SATA3, then make sure you purchase a SATA3 capable SSD.

With my Fujitsu, I was limited to SATA1 for the SSD. There was no choice. I saw a big benefit of SSD on the convertible tablet, but it still wasn't over 110MB/s.

There was a speed difference in the Hybrid vs SSD. It's the same as all the other tests reveal.

SSD > hybrid > normal sata.

The hybrids are always in the middle. (from my experience).

Still, for my DJ drive, there is a huge benefit because it seems like the directory LBA's are always stored in the cache so searching for songs is like lightning even with a library > 60,000 songs.
