[?] Moving from 4.7 to 5.0 - clean installation

Featured Replies

I am planing to move from v4.7 to latest beta v5.0.

I would like to do a clean installation on v5.0 but keep parity and data intact as in my current 4.7 setup.

Can I just boot from a clean 5.0 installation, assign parity drive and data drives as defined in my current 4.7 setup and start the array?

Will this keep all my data and parity intact?

Yes & yes. Do NOT format any drive. If any drive appears unformatted in v 5 stop and get help.

If any of your disks currently have an HPA, they will not be recognized as valid data drives.  If there are no HPAs, the data will be safe.  The HPAs must be removed BEFORE migrating to 5.0.

Other than that, the data on your data drives will be intact, but without the files in the config folder the parity calculations, although present on the parity disk will be considered as not-valid/non-existant, therefore it will be as if you never performed any initial parity calculation.    When you first start the 5.0 array it will perform an initial parity calculation.  You'll not be protected by parity again until it completes.

You'll also need to re-define any permissions and allocation preferences on your disks for user-shares.

Do not forget to make a full backup of your v4.7 USB-stick before wiping it and putting v5.0 on it! That way if there are any problems, you can always go back to 4.7 in case of an emergency.

OK, so I installed version 5.0 latest beta, re-assigned my data drives and new (bigger) parity drive.

I defined a new user (same as the one I used in v4.7), setup the shares un "Shares" and enabled SMB with previous workgroup name "WORKGROUP".

but.... can't access shares !!!

I tried rebooting the Winows machien I am accessing from and rebooting the unRAID array with no help.

What am I missing?

Do I have to add disk names under "include disks" in global share setting page "http://tower/Settings/ShareSettingsMenu"?

Did you follow the instructions in the 5.0 series to invoke the "New Permissions" step?

Is this also needed for a clean install?

YES.

Can I just run the "New Permissions" now or do I have to recreate the shares and the users?

Just click on the "New Permissions" button, do NOT leave the page until it finishes all of your drives.(It will process one at a time)
