Potential Build Advice from Recycled Parts

Featured Replies

I currently have this running WHS V1:

GIGABYTE GA-MA785G-UD3Hhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128395

AMD Athlon II X2 250http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103681

CORSAIR XMS2 4GB

I am going to be building a new server to replace it, but was wondering if these old parts would be a good start for a new unRaid server?  I would be putting it into a Norco RPC-4224.  I plan on getting an IBM M1015 with a Intel Expander RES2SV240.  The use of this server would be mainly for movie rips.

Would the power use on this compare to something newer?

Anybody?

No reason why it won't work but you do have to be aware of the Gigabyte HPA problem.  See here for details:

Regarding power consumption: compared to what?  Some other solutions will use more power, other will use less.  Are you actually planning on ripping on the server? Or is only a server?

Thank you for the link!  I will check tonight to see on HPA.

I guess I meant if I went with a newer processor and board would the draw less wattage (this kind of power, sorry.)?

I won't be doing any ripping on the server.  Just serving up files.

Don't worry about the HPA. It was one of the first boards to default to off. I have had this board for almost 3 years without any problems.

If you look at my system specs you will see that I have a relatively low end processor.  When all of the drives are spun down, it is drawing about 40W according to APC UPS.  I don't know what your power cost structure is but how long would it take you to recover the cost of a new motherboard and processor if you could find one that would half that?  And I don't know if you could do that good.  Your processor has a 65 W profile and mine has a 45W profile.

The sempro 140 has all the computing power necessary to run unRAID with the basic add-ons  such as UPS monitoring, file name caching, e-mail notification, etc.  I don't know if you could shut down one of the cores on your Athlon and save some power or not.  I seem to recall the some people were turning cores on (via BIOS settings on some boards) on some of the AMD product line and boasting their processor to the next level up the feeding chain.  If you could do that you should be able to turn them back off too.

No chance of getting to half of your 40 W, as most of the 40 W is being used by things other than the cpu.  Its wasted in the power supply, wasted in the mother board, wasted in the usb, hd, and graphics systems.  Your cpu will only use 40 W just before it dies in agony, and at that time the total system power usage will be much, much higher.  While its idling, will only be using a fraction of that.  Things that help more are getting a power supply that is 80+ rated, and better yet if its 80+ gold rated.  Then it doesn't waste as much of the power you are feeding it.  Lots of standard power supplies are rated at  only 65% efficiency.

Good build to check out if unraid is the system for you. A faster system will give you better write speed but if you can find a drive to use for cache you largely mitigate that.

I started out with an athlon X2 and am now happy with my i32120, faster and uses less power.

Great thing about unraid is that you can see if its for you using your old parts, and you will be able to run with them for years ifvyou want also.

Thanks!  I checked mine is you are correct, it is off by default.  Nice!
