How to confirm USB Flashdrive is set up correctly

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm trying to see if my m/board will support UnRAID. See this thread for details...

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=198.0

Anyway, after trying a couple of things I'm not having much success in booting from my flashdrive. I've read the instructions here...

http://www.lime-technology.com/wordpress/?page_id=19

But the BIOS is just getting to the point where it says "Verifying DMI Pool Data......." and this is where it goes no further. I've tried changing the BIOS settings relating to Boot order (where it successfully sees the SANdisk Cruzer as an attached device), I've tried USB-HDD, USB-CD-ROM & USB-ZIP but it always ends up stopping at the same place.

It's just occurred to me that if somehow I've got the USB Flashdrive set up incorrectly, then these settings won't change anything really, so my question is as the title of this thread....how can I confirm my USB Flashdrive is set up correctly?

Cheers

Ross

Have you tried booting it in another machine? From your description it sounds like that MB may not support boot from USB Flash :(

Or, you might need to use the HP format tool Tom listed to format your USB Flash drive in order to get your motherboard to recognize the flash drive as a bootable device.  (format it, use syslinux to make it bootable, copy other files in place, then re-test)

Good suggestion.

I'll give the HP Format tool a try.

It's weird though, the BIOS sees the device - even names it correctly, lists it as a possible option in the boot preferences, but won't boot from it.

If it's just the Flashdrive in need of a reformat, then that's understandable but, if after doing that it still fails, then I'm probably going to have to give up on this M/Board.  :'(

First things first.....SUCCESS!!!!!!  ;D

At least now it's booting up from the flashdrive! I didn't quite know what I was supposed to see, but when I logged in using the default name of "Tower" in Firefox on my main PC it found it! So now I've got a whole bunch more questions, but to save confusion I'll start a new thread.
