August 28, 201213 yr Hello all! As the title states I have two builds that I need help deciding between. The first is the X9SCM and i3 combo, which i understand is widely supported by Unraid. The second is a more "watered down" option. I was looking at the following Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157274 Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103873 My question now is, with there being over a $200 difference in price what am i gaining/losing by choosing either build? It seems the money would be better spent on drives. However, I do not want to sacrifice performance. The server will initally consist of 3 total drives, however that may increase. It will be used for streaming one-two .mp4 movies across my lan. Thanks!!
August 29, 201213 yr If all you are going to do is stream 1-2 video files the i3 is overkill imho. The AMD chip you listed will do that without problem. I have a single core AMD Sempron and it streams a single 1080 stream across the lan without issue. The i3 is certain more "future proof", but if you don't see anything additional in the future there is no reason for it. Just my 2 cents.
August 29, 201213 yr Also, keep in mind that the Supermicro board needs ECC RAM, which is different and costs a bit more than normal DDR3 RAM. Also, not all power supplies will work it it. As for which to choose, I'd go with the Supermicro/i3 combo if you can afford it. There is a deal on it on Newegg right now for $169 with a free USB 3 card. I picked one up to go with my existing i3 2120 and ordered some ECC RAM and a new power supply. Will run it like this for a while but the plan is to get a Xeon E3 and go for ESXi virtualization.

August 29, 201213 yr Great choice. Get a Seasonic X??? or Corsair TX series PSU. They are pricey but should work great. The X9SCM-F has IPMI which is a really nice feature.
August 29, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the response. What would be the benefit of one of those as opposed to something like the CORSAIR Builder Series CX600?
August 29, 201213 yr Thanks for the response. What would be the benefit of one of those as opposed to something like the CORSAIR Builder Series CX600? They simply work! Read this and the rest of the thread: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=14872.msg141722#msg141722 It's a real PITA troublshooting this kind of issues. I've been there.
August 29, 201213 yr Author I would order the CX600 an hour before reading this. Too late to cancel order. Oh well...live and learn I guess. I ordered the TX series and I will RMA the other one... Thanks for saving me a headache though trying to troubleshoot!
August 30, 201213 yr I know what you mean. I tries a PC Power and Cooling PSU. System wouldn't start. I swapped RAM, CPU, Motherboard. Nothing worked. Then I plugged in a Seasonic X760. Presto! System been up 24/7 over the last months. I control and set it up entirely remotely through IPMI.
September 8, 201213 yr I can confirm that the PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 750 actually does work with the X9SCM. I installed mine today and have been up and running for a couple of hours with no issues. It is actually on sale on Amazon right now for $69 after rebate. $40 off the normal price. The unit is really nice and has enough amps on the 12 volt rail to support 20+ drives. http://www.amazon.com/PC-Power-Cooling-Performance-compatible/dp/B003U29C3Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347069130&sr=8-1&keywords=pc+power+and+cooling+silencer+mk+ii+750w

The original 750 works as well that's why I bought the MK II. It wasn't until I saw posts about other makers not working with newer models that it even occurred to me that an upgraded model would have problems.

I believe it was actually a post of yours I saw a while back saying it worked that made me decide to get it. Thanks!
