September 7, 201213 yr Here is a screen shot of my share settings for a folder named "Protected". I set this share to secure and hidden, but if I type \\tower\protected is comes up with out authentication and I can add files. Any ideas what I have done wrong? Thanks, David
September 7, 201213 yr Try changing the allowed user to someone else and disallowing djones. Your computer may be logging in for you.
September 8, 201213 yr Author OK so I added another user but I am unable to remove the existing user, or set their access to none. Is it correct that the only restrictions I can set it on write and all users can see all shares bu default? In other words, all users can always read everything and I can only restrict changes? when I changed djones to read only, it worked as expected but I'd like to set this up so only certain users can access the share.
September 8, 201213 yr Author I am pretty sure this is where I am on this... I took this from the WIKI. -------------------------- User level security is a feature that lets you restrict access to shares according to user name. When User level security is enabled, you will need to enter the list of users who may access your server. When a user attempts to connect to a share on your unRAID server, a dialog box will appear asking them to enter their user name and password before being granted access to shares. In addition, you can specify which users may access each share, as well as retrict access to read-only. If User level security is not enabled, then you do not need to enter a list of users. Any user that attempts to connect to a share on your unRAID server is granted access, subject to the Export mode setting on the share. User level security This is the control for enabling or disabling User level security. Export read/write, hidden The share will be exported, but will not show up in browse lists (i.e., under My Network Places). If User level security is not enabled, then anyone on the network who knows about the share can read/write data in the share. If User level security is enabled, then anyone who can log into the server and knows about the share can read/write data in the share. --------------------- First off, I don't see anywhere that I can "Enable" "User level security" for the server. It appears that it is enabled by default if I select security = secure. When I do that the UI forces me to allow everyone that has a username, access to the share. I suppose that is not a big deal but seems limited unless I am missing something. Say I wanted to create a user share for each family member. Each member would be able to read each others share just not be able to write to it. Also, I am not being prompted to enter a username and password when I access the share. I am not logged in but it lets me see the files and folders just not add files. Its very strange. I checked the saved credentials and there are none relevant to delete but I deleted them all anyway, but I get the same result. Any ideas?
September 9, 201213 yr Author It just dawned on me that I may be having these issues because I'm still on the trial. I have two more drives ready to add so I guess I'll go ahead and get the registered version.
September 9, 201213 yr I've been struggling with users and rights and shares as well, i found that if i made a change, it sometimes didnt work, and users could still enter with no password or could see each others shares while they werent supposed to. I found rebooting the machine after changes on users and rigths, 'finalizes' it and makes it work in my case.
September 9, 201213 yr Author I ran into this as well but instead of rebooting the server, I found that restarting samba made the changes take affect. A simple way to do it in the UI, is to go into Settings -> SMB and click "Apply" and it will restart samba. David
