TheDragon
In terms of budget would rather take my time and spend a little more, than rush into it buying the cheapest components available I'm aiming for a build that is capable of 20 drives, currently have around 7TB of data, though looking to make one build that will last, and have ample room for future expansion In terms of addons I would eventually be looking at APC UPS, not sure I can see any others I'll be using! I'm looking to exclusively use green drives, as another goal for the build is to keep power usage to a minimum. I've come up with this spec, looking for some input/reassurance really that I've not missed anything!! Case: Antec Twelve Hundred - Chosen as I found it should be possible to add four 5in3 Drive bays, not an immediate concern as I don't have that many drives yet http://store.antec.com/Product/enclosure-gear_for_gamers/twelve-hundred/0-761345-15120-7.aspx CPU: Intel Celeron 430 1.8GHZ - Already have http://ark.intel.com/products/29735/Intel-Celeron-Processor-430-512K-Cache-1_80-GHz-800-MHz-FSB Motherboard: Supermicro C2SEE - Already have http://www.supermicro.co.uk/products/motherboard/Core/G45/C2SEE.cfm PSU: Seasonic X-660 660W - I see that the 'SeaSonic X Series X650 Gold 650W' is recommended on the PSU thread, however I can't seem to find that one. Would this be a suitable alternative? (apologies posted this question already in the wrong place on the forum!!) http://www.seasonicusa.com/NEW_X-series_560-660-760-850.htm HDD1: Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3030ALA630?, 3TB - Already have one, empty (plan to get another as a parity drive) http://www.hgst.com/deskstar-5k3000 HDD2: Western Digital WD10EARS, 1TB - Already have, plan to add once data transferred http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-701229.pdf HDD3: Western Digital WD20EARS, 2TB - Already have, plan to add once data transferred http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-701229.pdf HDD4: Western Digital WD20EARS, 2TB - Already have, plan to add once data transferred http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-701229.pdf HDD5: Western Digital WD20EARS, 2TB - Already have, plan to add once data transferred http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-701229.pdf HDD Controller: Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 - Plan to add at a later date, when required http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SASLP-MV8.cfm From my research I believe I'll be using the latest beta - to gain support for 3TB drives. Any feedback would be very much appreciated, especially on the PSU as cannot get my head around if the one I've mentioned above is suitable or not!! EDIT: I've had a further thought since making my original post! Will the Intel® ICH10 chipset on the motherboard support 3TB drives? Or will I need the HDD controller mentioned above to gain support for 3TB drives? I've done a little googling but not come up with anything definitive. Thanks in advance, if you're still reading by this point Link to comment
Chugiak
It looks to be a slightly upgraded version of the x650. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/340529-28-seasonic-x650-gold-x660-gold The advice at Tom's was that they are pretty much interchangeable and to buy whichever is cheaper. TheDragon
Priceless! Thanks for the quick reply and link. I was fretting about whether the new version still used a single-rail, as wasn't something I could see mentioned in the specification for it. Thanks again Link to comment
Ford Prefect
I was fretting about whether the new version still used a single-rail, as wasn't something I could see mentioned in the specification for it. In general, a single rail PSU will have a load info marked as +12V, a multi-rail PSU will have info for each rail in its specs, like +12V1 and +12V2, See here for a multi-rail example: http://www.seasonicusa.com/M12II-Bronze.htm Link to comment
TheDragon
That definitely makes things clearer! Thank you for the explanation Link to comment
TheDragon
Just to add in case this helps anyone that reads this in the future. I managed to answer my question regarding Supermicro C2SEE (ICH10) & compatibility with 3TB drives - see post here http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=11183.msg109527#msg109527 Link to comment
