Kernel Panic on fresh install from pre-config'd usb flash from Lime

Featured Replies

Received two unRAID Server Pro USB Flash drives (Sony) from Lime this week.  Upon booting, I immediately get a kernel panic.

Specifications:

Motherboard:

MSI 890FXA-GD70

Memory:

Kingston Value Ram, 1066 DDR3 (2) 2GB Kits [4gb total]

Processor:

AMD3 - AMD Sempron 140 @ 2.7GHz

Power Supply:

Corsair CMPU-650TX - 650W, single rail (suggest from lime)

Controller(s):

(2) LSI SAS3082E-R based cards (2)x2 SAS-8087

Disks:

(3) Seagate 1TB Drives 7200RPM

Case:

Azza Helios 910

Considering I cannot boot to single-user or gain any shell, as far as I know -- I put the guts of the kernel panic below.  However, the call trace is far too many brackted values for my fingers to deal with this morning.  Therefore, I will snap a photo of the screen and submit it later.  I've tried what I could find from other users in the forums as far as troubleshooting goes.  Still no dice.  I have 18 drives total for this install once I can get unRAID to post at least.  (5) 4TB Hitachi, (4) 3TB Hitachi, (4) 2TB Seagate 7200RPM (2) 2TB WD 5900RPM (3) 1TB Seagate 7200RPM  -- excited for the storage, frustrated at error ;/

  • memtest for more than 24 hours, 0 errors.
  • checked timing, V etc on memory, correct.
  • swapped memory, 1 stick and up, nothing
  • changed connections on drives
  • changed usb ports
  • modified bios settings to match whats in bios settings under support
  • made sure drive controllers are JBOD (sas cards)

Pull the two LSI cards and see what happens.

Did Tom tell you which version of unRaid he was preloading? In the past, I think he was loading the last full release, 4.7, instead of a beta version. You need to know which version you are trying to load. Has this equipment been tested with the free limited version of unRaid prior to getting your new keys?

@Frank:  I will pull them and try, though then I will have no drives, but hopefully it could go beyond.  I have a friend using the same exact cards utilizing unRAID without any issue(s) so I hope it isn't those cards.

@JonathanM:  Tom did not tell me which version was on the preloaded flash drives.  I have not tested with the free version.  Ordered flash last week before I went on vacation and they were here when I arrived home, so I got excited and tried to boot it up -- to this lovely panic.  Then immediately started troubleshooting, first with memory as every Kernel Panic I've experienced on my Arch Linux machines and some odd panics in FreeBSD brought me to memory as the issue.

If it were me, I'd grab a spare USB stick and temporarily install the latest beta (RC8a?) to see if it boots correctly. If it does, back up the key file on one of your licensed sticks, go through the same process that worked setting up the spare stick and copy your key file back to it.

The reason that I said to remove the cards is that in all likelihood, you have a hardware problem.  I have followed this board for more than a year and Kernel panics have been caused by some piece of hardware that is not working properly or is incompatible with unRAID.  You have already investigate and tested several hardware items that can cause problems.  I am not a psychic and I know I usually have to find faulty hardware using the test or replace methods.  Removing the cards can eliminate them as a source of the problem.  You won't know until you try.

PS--- Don't button the case up until you get this solved.  I had a Doctor friend who always put EVERY screw back into the case before he would test to see if he had fixed the problem.  Guess he was worried about the 'patient' getting an infection if he didn't close!  ::)

I have removed the LSI cards and same error.  All that is left is my memory and a Radeon 5850 which I need temporarily as this MOBO doesn't have any video on board.

...first with memory as every Kernel Panic I've experienced ...brought me to memory as the issue.

I had the same issue with my Gigabyte board.

I had to go into the bios and set the ram timings manually... no AUTO settings

Haven't had a Kernel Panic since...

YMMV

I went in and set my ram to 7-7-7-20 @ 1.506V and let's see how she does now....

I tried making a 5.0RC-8beta drive from latest flash on website but I cannot get bzroot to copy over to the thumb drive, just sits and hangs

Boo!  So, even with memory settings manually entered and the LSI cards removed.. no where, same panic.

Try running a live distro from USB, see if you get the same panic.

Also, use your main pc to test if you can, install your ram and videocard, unplug all harddrives, and try to boot from the unraid USB. If it boots you know those remaining components work and its an issue with the motherboard.

Could also be a faulty power supply.

I have plenty of motherboards, video cards and psus to use as test systems.  I'm also a huge bit coin miner so I have all my old gpu setups ;)  Lots.. and lots.. of gpu based setups.

However, I just used an AM2/AM2+ board I had laying around MSI K9A2 Platinum with a 2.7GHz cpu I believe and 2gb or DDR2..

I dont see a kernel panic, all I see is a bunch of posts from PCI: not using MMCONFIG, bio: create slab <bio-o> at 0, ACPI etc etc etc

Booting Node 0, Processors #1, 2 CPUs

looks normal no panics no errors I ca nsee, but not sure how far it should go before I know whether or not its legit..

I'm booting only from my beta usb drive, haven't put the one I got shipped from LT.

What does a normal, new install look like step wise?  I'd assume I'd make it to a CLI or menu that showed me UUID for my hardware as I noticed you need that to request a key.

Alright, so the K9A2 Platinum with the Athlon XP Phenom X2 or whatever it is @ 2.7 GHz seems fine.  Only have 2gb ram total for this board laying around I think, but luckily 4 PCI-E so I can still use all my Sas 8087->sata controllers for drives.

Now I am curious however whats the deal with the other hardware ;/

I am using the same PSU as I had in the other machine.

If someone wants to debug to add more hardware to compat list, I have quite a few available configurations and can setup a lantronix kvm_ip for debug love.

Otherwise, guess I'll just be using this mobo, cpu, mem combo
