November 4, 201213 yr So my brothers unraid server throwed a red ball at me today. After troubleshooting a bit it seems the only data drive in the array at the moment is dead. Tried changing cables, controller, the lot. This drive seems dead. Smart output: root@Tower:~# smartctl -q errorsonly -H -l selftest -l error /dev/sda ATA Error Count: 1 Error 1 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 651 hours (27 days + 3 hours) Syslog added in attachments. (removed some unimportant personal bits...) Lots of read and write errors. So... i stopped the array and immediately removed the drive after powering down. I now have it running some smart tests in my personal desktop at home, but all tests fail miserably. So after RMA'ing the drive... If i start the server with the new drive attached will unraid complain about not finding the old drive? Normally the array starts automatically after a reboot. What will it do when booting without or with a completely new drive? Normally i just select the new drive in place of the old and start the array, but what will it do when first powering up the array? This drive has run for 27days... this is my 2nd seagate drive this year i have to rma tough luck i guess? syslog-2012-11-04.txt
November 4, 201213 yr I don't have any input on how Unraid will respond as I am new to Unraid. However, I have RMA'd five SG drives this year. I currently can price match and use two stackable coupons at staples plus rewards and get 2TB 7200rpm drives for about $78 which is hard to pass-up. But the RMA-ing is getting annoying. Did you pre clear the drive prior to use?
November 4, 201213 yr Author I did preclear it, didn't have errors then. Though i did only one pass due to time constraints... I contacted the original retailer in hope they would be able to send me a new one faster. My previous experience with seagate RMA tells me i'm up for 3weeks downtime... which isn't too bad considering shipment and such. But it is annoying to say the least... especially with such a young drive.
November 4, 201213 yr I am in the grips of pre clearing myself. Have almost all of my =< 2TB drives nearly completed with 3 passes. The greater sized drives are taking forever. Most retailers will accept 30-day return. Especially the bigger online outfits. Seagate has the 3 day RMA I believe but it costs $30/drive which is nice if it's vital to be back online.

Seagate will send a replacement drive with a return shipping label for $9.95. The replacement should arrive within 5 days.
November 4, 201213 yr Sorry. Ha. Last RMA was three drives. Why I thought $30. Was off. I got my replacements day after I requested. OP: I am curious what Unraid will do upon the new drive. I'd imagine you would just pre clear it, set as data drive, or skip clear if you need data ASAP, then it should rebuild or prompt to rebuild? Though it seems if you were running 1 Parity 1 Data 1 cache The parity is basically just a copy of the data.
November 4, 201213 yr Reboot with the new drive. Unraid may see it UNassigned so you may have to assign it to where the old drive was. Then start the arrary. Unraid should start to rebuild back on the new drive.
