SidebandSamurai
A quick question about 4 TB drives. is it worth buying one (for Parity)? Thanks for the comments. --Sideband Samurai Link to comment
Brian B.
Wait. Seagate is dumping 3TB drives now. That means they are ramping up 4TB production. ("All this has happened before, and it will all happen again.") Costco already has Seagate external 4tb drives for $189. They will be down to $150 in a few months. If you don't need the space right now, buy the cheaper 2 and 3tb drives on sale. Don't get a bigger drive until you can upgrade parity and at least one data drive at the same time (to get all that delicious XL storage.) Link to comment
SidebandSamurai
Thanks Brian B, I am actually in the middle of a new unraid build. Your advice makes sense. I was thinking that buying at least one 4 TB drive would at least future proof my Unraid build. --Sideband Samurai Link to comment
Razor444
If you have working unRaid system, can't you just remove 3TB parity drive and put new 4TB parity drive and rebuild parity into that drive? Link to comment
BLKMGK
If you have working unRaid system, can't you just remove 3TB parity drive and put new 4TB parity drive and rebuild parity into that drive? Yup, upgrading parity is as easy as upgrading any other drive and I've done it at least 4-5 times. I'd suggest not over buying on drives. If there's one lesson I've learned it's to not buy drives until I really need them as barring natural disasters prices never go up! What might seem like a deal now won't be 2months from now. A lesson I've learned the hard way multiple times :-( Link to comment
Razor444
Yeah, but we all remember what has happened last autumn/winter......and those floods might come again...you never know Link to comment
SidebandSamurai
Sounds Like I will wait in the 4TB drives for now. Maybe I will spend the money on a RED 3TB drive and get a little better performance. --Sideband Samurai Link to comment
