December 12, 201213 yr Quite interesting the following product from intel: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6509/intel-launches-centerton-atom-s1200-family-first-atom-for-servers atom for servers From 1.6 GHz (6.1 W) to 2.13 GHz (10 W) Pricing starts at $54 What do you think?
December 12, 201213 yr For many the extra PCIe lanes would help, but I think this paragraph is the more interesting... "In 2013 Intel will release Avoton, Centerton’s successor and based on Intel’s 22nm process. Based on Intel’s previous roadmaps we know that 22nm is also supposed to coincide with the launch of Intel’s new Silvermont architecture, so it’s reasonable to assume that Avoton will be Intel’s Silvermont-based processor for servers." That could offer a more useful performance boost over the current Cedarview Atoms. The Centerton range are a step in the right direction, clearly, but it seems a very modest step. Personally, I would have hoped a 2.5GHz / 10W option to help bridge the gap to the rest of the Intel range.
December 12, 201213 yr It'll be interesting to see what performance those processors really have. The AMD Neo CPUs in the HP Microservers seem to perform much faster than the Intel Atoms. The N40L (1.5GHz) benchmarks at 970 with the Atom D2700 (2.13GHz) at 900. The AMD N54L (2.2GHz) has a score of 1189 http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+Turion+II+Neo+N54L+Dual-Core&id=477 I'm guessing the AMD parts are cheaper as well.
December 20, 201213 yr Supermicro's first board is X9SBAA-F http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/ATOM/X9/X9SBAA-F.cfm Unfortunately only 4 onboard SATA ports plus single PCI slot make it not that suitable for Unraid. And finding suitable memory can be a challenge for the time being.
