January 11, 201313 yr I have a Sonos system which plays music tracks kept on my UnRaid server. Its not a major problem, more of an inconvenience, but when the disc with the music share on it spins down (after a period of inactivity), it takes between 30 seconds to 1 minute for the disc to spin back up and connect to the Sonos system again. I was therefore wondering if this delay could be eliminated by replacing the drive with an SSD, which would of course never need to spin down. Has anyone tried this, and are SSD's compatible with UnRaid 4.7? Thanks, - Gareth

January 11, 201313 yr That is why I have a spin down delay.. but if the issue is that the spin up is an issue then I would start with changing the spin up delay for that one drive to a higher amount of time.. With unraid you can differentiate the spin down per disk..

Also consider that constant spinup/down cycles, and the associated thermal cycling, are also detrimental to longevity just as much as constant spinning. Ideally youshould set your spin-down delay so that during your normal activity you are avoiding continually re-spinning the drive. Finally, if you are concerned about heat, then solve the problem with better cooling. A single drive spun up should not be a concern considering you spin-up every single drive for monthly parity checks that nominally last 5+ hours. If your system can handle that, it can handle a single or double drive spinning.
