Acer H340

Featured Replies

So I have unraid setup on an Acer H340, booting from the internal 256 MB flash memory, but I've got an issue with power down.  When I powerdown with any of the shutdown options (-h or -hP or-P) it seems to reboot after powering off.  The exact behavior is it powers off for about a second, then powers back on and reboots.  Any suggestions?

I'm hoping to get it working so it can get it to powerdown for power failures with the APC UPS package and clean shutdown.

Look in your BIOS for power settings.  Also look to see that it not setup to wake-up-on-LAN.

EDIT: Describe exactly what an Acer 340 is.  I am wondering about the 256 of flash memory...  It sounds like it not your 'normal' PC setup

An Acer H340 is a small server box that was sold with Windows Home Server on it, that has 4 hot swappable drive trays, and an Intel Atom processor.  It was designed to run headless (no video), but with a debug card, I have video output from the built in video on the motherboard.  The original purpose of the flash was to hold the OS in case of failure, so WHS could be rebuilt.

I got tired of the "wasted" space with duplication, and some other quirks of WHS, so decided to try Unraid.  I have it working for the most part, (and the built in flash memory is nice to hold Unraid, so I don't tie up one of the USB ports) but still have some final details like this to get fixed.

No luck in BIOS (I thought I'd checked there, but wanted to double check WOL settings).  The only thing related to power in BIOS is an option about what to do after a power loss when power is restored.  I did set this to stay off instead of previous state, but there is no change.  I also timed the duration of how long the machine stays off, and it's about 6 seconds (can't imagine why that would matter, but I thought I would add it as well).

Try with the network cable unplugged...  You might have to unplug the cable after the server is booted.

No change, still powers back on after about 6 seconds.

I had this exact problem with my H340 and never could figure it out. I went through all the (limited) BIOS settings and tried various tricks after tons of Googling. Naturally, it only happens under unRAID and not the Windows Home Server OS that it comes up with. I did not try any other linux distributions. Didn't try BSD solutions either, such as FreeNAS. FWIW, I was using a regular USB drive and not the internal flash - I didn't want to get locked into the UUID of the internal flash if I ever wanted to upgrade the server, something you should probably consider before buying a license.

I eventually decided I wanted something a little more powerful anyway and picked up an HP Microserver. As an added bonus, HD temps dropped several degrees. If you plan to leave your server on 24/7 and not utilize suspend modes, it probably won't make a real difference. The H340 is a nice little box.

The Acer forum hasn't been much help (it's pretty new, so there isn't much information there, but I have posted there as well)

I haven't decided if I'm going to keep using the internal flash when I buy a license or not (right now I'm just trying to test everything out to make sure this will work for my needs).  You make a good point, but it's also nice not to have a USB port tied up and a flash drive sticking out.  I also haven't tried other distributions, I did see that there are some posts about power off behavior with FreeNas, but they were different (machine didn't power off at all).  I do plan on keeping the machine on 24/7, so the only time this is a problem would be with a power outage for a graceful shutdown.  I'm thinking I might be able to just have the UPS shutdown as well, which might cover me in that situation.

If you decide to do this you might consider editing the syslinux.cfg file to increase the timeout period.  (This parameter determines the delay before the default action for the boot process (unRAID or  memtst) starts.)  Increase it so that it long enough that UPS is definitely shutdown before the actual boot of unRAID starts.

I bought a Sandisk Cruzer Fit for this exact reason. It's so tiny, a casual observer wouldn't even notice it.
