September 29, 200619 yr Tom, I doubt this is an unRaid issue but this *is* the beta testing forum.... I'm sure this is a generic issue, not just with Beta2, and I suspect is actually something to do with my drive, but, I have an old PATA Seagate 20GB ATA-66 (I think) drive which I'm testing unRaid with and all is good other than I have a * in the drive temp column. hdparm -i shows it's running at full speed (udma4) but I've no idea if that helps with whether or not the SMART data is available to the OS. Any ideas, help/suggestions? (not really bothered with this drive, just thought I'd mention it from a "have you seen this before"/beta test POV ) Cheers, Matt
September 29, 200619 yr I have a couple of drives that are older and they don't have SMART on it and won't display temps either
September 29, 200619 yr Author I'm pretty certain that in the BIOS POST screen I see the S.M.A.R.T. message. I'll dig out the model number and look that up. In the mean time, if there is a command I can run to show the SMART data? Ta, Matt
September 29, 200619 yr Author Checked the manual and it does support SMART. Checked the BIOS and it reports the drive is SMART capable and enabled. Plugged in another drive and that was also reported the same and unRaid displays the temp of that one.... Matt
October 1, 200619 yr Author LOL. I should put you in my address book instead of typing it or cut-and-pasting it - as much my fault as yours.... Re-sent to your real address. Ta, Matt
October 1, 200619 yr I have some temp issues to report as well- running beta 4 on all identical WD 400g drives (12 drives in all) one disk, close to the time it was to spin down, showed a temp of 5c...an impossible temp, I refreshed a few times and it went back to 39c as it was before. Also all spun down disks (blinking green lights on the web interface), do not display temp but rather an asterix, is this unavoidable? does smart report back only of the drives are spun up?
October 1, 200619 yr Author I read somewhere on here that spun down drives do not report their temp as unRaid would have to spin them up to access the SMART data. My drive that isn't being reported has an asterisk in the temp column, so I guess, you either get an asterisk or the temp, the reason for the asterisk varying... Matt
October 2, 200619 yr I have some temp issues to report as well- running beta 4 on all identical WD 400g drives (12 drives in all) one disk, close to the time it was to spin down, showed a temp of 5c...an impossible temp, I refreshed a few times and it went back to 39c as it was before. Also all spun down disks (blinking green lights on the web interface), do not display temp but rather an asterix, is this unavoidable? does smart report back only of the drives are spun up? I have seen "funny" values for drive temps once in a while - I believe it's the drive generating the funny value. The code to get the value from the drive is pretty simple. Also I have a "white label" Maxtor 250GB drive purchased a few years ago that reports temperatues in the range 2-8 degrees C. Other than that, works fine - probably why it's a "white label". BTW, it also has a serial number of all-zeros. Regarding the asterisk - Any S.M.A.R.T. command sent to a drive in the "standy" condition (ie, spun down), causes it to enter the "ready" condition (ie, spun up). This is a BUG in the either the SMART specification, or drive manufacturer implementation (or both). All drives seem to behave this way so I would blame the SMART spec. To avoid having all the drives spin up just by refreshing the Main page of the Management Utility, we check if the drive is spun down, and if so, we don't get the temperature. Drive temperature should be taken with a "grain of salt" anyway. There's no telling how accurate they are. Also, it's location is not part of any spec, so you should not trust it's absolute value. Probably, using its relative value is reasonable. That is, establish some kind of baseline temp for the drive. If the temp then deviates by some amount (say 15 degrees C), generate an alert. This is the basis of the temperature alert - though the 'alert' feature hasn't been released yet
