optiman
Hey all, I found out my current rig (specs below) can't get the job done for Plex. I'm thinking of slamming in a new motherboard and cpu. I want to keep my same case and drives, etc, just swap the mb out. I want my new mombo to be as stable as my current one. I have no issues at all, solid. I was thinking of getting a i7 processor. I don't want to spend a ton of cash, but I'm willing to invest $400 -$500, if I have to. I guess I'll need new memory too. Thanks! Link to comment
mrow
What kind of PSU do you have? I'd definitely recommend going the Supermicro/Xeon E3 route if you have a compatible PSU. If not having to replace that would put you too much over budget. Link to comment

I do have a Supermicro MB now. With 10 drives in it, I have never had a lack of power issue. If that one wouldn't work, what PSU would you recommend for my setup? I may be willing to go a little higher. Thanks! Link to comment

PSU (if yours will not work): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703027 CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117286 Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182253 RAM (just 8GB for now, you can add more later): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239230 You're looking at $604 total if you need the power supply. $504 if you current one works. You might be able to shave $5-10 bucks if you shop around. Link to comment
optiman
Thanks! I can get a Intel Core 2 Extreme QUAD CORE QX9650, used on ebay for $220., but hell that is the same price as the newer CPU you were suggesting and it's much faster. I would just need a new mb too. Decisions.... Link to comment
mrow
You need the new RAM too. You need ECC RAM for this board. Link to comment
optiman
I think I may try the Intel Core 2 Extreme QUAD CORE QX9650 first, as it's only a $200. I should see some good cpu improvement over my existing e6600, and I can just drop this in without changing anything. Link to comment
mrow
Keep in mind you will most likely need a new heatsink for that CPU as it runs extremely hot. It runs literally twice as hot as your current CPU. That means it's going to suck down a lot more electricity too. Link to comment
