Slow access to user shares from Macbook

Featured Replies

I just got a core i5 Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  When I open finder it takes a long time before the unraid server appears under shared. When I click the server the list of user shares appears instantly. But when I click a share it again takes a long time to load. There are many folders in this share. When this list finally appears I click a folder which holds up to 10 files/folders. Loading this folder again takes a long time. Much longer than on a Windows machine. Is this a Mac OS problem and can this be made faster? My WiFi link speed on the Macbook shows 130 Mb/s. I am new to Macs so I might do things wrong and maybe there are other faster ways.

Are you using AFP? Is the Windows machine also on WIFI?

Are you using AFP? Is the Windows machine also on WIFI?

I try to connect my Macbook to shares on the unraid server through SMB. The Windows machine is also a laptop on WiFi.

Try with a cable to test. Try AFP to compare.

Yeah, unfortunately SMB from a Mac to the server is remarkably slow, even cabled.  Using AFP helps, also using the cache_dirs script can help for viewing.  When I know I'm about to do a bunch of file operations, I just go ahead and spin up everything, that helps as well.

Hope that helps!

I have the same problem (always have)..  This shouldn't have anything to do with "Caching" or waiting for the drives to spin up.

For me, when I click on "UNRAID-SMB" (I have both AFP and SAMBA running, but only use AFP for Time Machines) it takes 15-45 seconds for just the list of shares to even show up.  They don't have to spin up for this.

Plus, when accessing the list of shares on a Windows based machines, it returns the information almost immediately.

I read somewhere about a setting on the Mac that might help, but I can't seem to find it.

There must be a better solution.
