kernel panic vmxnet3 ESXi 5.1

Featured Replies

I just woke up this morning to a crashed unRAID system.

Specs:

Esxi 5.1, unRAID rc11, and running three plugins: sab, sickbeard and openvpn. I was also preclearing a 3TB drive when this happened.

I was unable to retrieve the log due to the fact the system had kernel panic and I only have this following screen to go on.

Please any help in understand this kernel panic would be greatly appreciated.

Kernel panics are frequently caused by bad memory, or incorrectly configured memory.  Start there by performing a memory test.

Other than that, your configuration is so non-standard with all the add-ons and running under Esxi, I doubt many will be able to help.

Thanks for the reply. I doubt it's a memory problem, been running with this setup for quite some time, but it's the first time I experience this type of error.

But you're right, my config is non-standard and I figured I'd probably not get much help, was worth a try. Something must of changed on my end, as I've been running unRAID in a vm for a while now without ever seeing this panic. Only thing I changed was the addition of the openvpn plugin which may or may not have anything to do with it.

Thanks for the suggestion PCRx. Yes, I had done that some time ago. But from what I understand the VMXNET3 driver comes with unRAID, if that's indeed the culprit.

That's correct. Just suggested it as something to rule out in case you still had an older version of tools installed.

How are the temps? Sometimes overheated RAM can cause freezing. Load up the IPMI (assuming your MB has that?) and check the event log to see if the MB sensors picked up on any RAM or CPU issues.

I never thought to look at the Event log with IPMIView, thanks. But I only see 9 events, all Chassis Intrusion events...

Temps have been in the medium range for sometime 35.0C/95F which seems to be fine.

I actually experienced this exact problem as well.

I was preclearing 2x 3TB drives when this occurred. Im suspecting it has something to do with the preclearing?

Machine was running fine before. Will do some test and report back on this.

Edit: Also running no mods other then VMtools

I had this problem with 5.0rc10.  It stopped after I applied the most recent patches to ESXi

If you are referring to patches ESXi510-201210001, ESXi510-201212001, I've already installed those prior to the crash. I'm glad I'm not alone on this...

I doubt it's because of faulty hardware, seems more like hardware / resource conflict or driver related. I doubt this has anything to do with it but I was passing in a laser printer at the time along with the flash usb key for the unRAID license. I since decided to move over the printer to another vm and tried preclearing again, the crash has not come back.
