March 17, 201313 yr Hello. I recently installed a new hard drive. When I powered up unRAID (v4.7) everything was connected ok. Then I needed to powerdown unraid for a few minutes but when I booted back I lost connection with the server. I cannot ping from/to, no putty and of course no webui. What happened suddenly? I did many reboots and powerdowns. Then I re-formatted the flash drive and installed the latest rc but still no connection whatsoever. I attach the syslog. Can you please help me locate the problem? syslog.txt
March 18, 201313 yr Author I really need your help. I cannot understand why unRAID lost connection out of the blue. Is it the onboard NIC? I know it's not the plugins because I reformatted the flash drive with the new rc (5.0-rc11) of unraid. this is the result of ifconfig eth0 Link encap :Ethernet HWaddr 00:1c:c0:90:40:05 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:63 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:7385 (7.2 KiB) Interrupt:20 Memory:e3200000-e3220000
March 18, 201313 yr I know it's not the plugins because I reformatted the flash drive with the new rc (5.0-rc11) of unraid. Your log file shows other stuff running, so you cannot be certain that they are not responsible. Remove all add-ons and if the problem returns then provide another log file.

Ok, this is the syslog of 5.0-rc11 ('clean' flash drive, no add-ons). Thank you... syslog_new.txt
March 18, 201313 yr Author Is there a process that will show me if the onboard NIC is failing or not? Tomorrow I will try to put a pci network card, after I disable the Onboard LAN in BIOS. I hope that works, otherwise I don't know what else could be going wrong. I had no network problems with my unRaid for 3 years. Just need to confirm the cause of the problem...
March 18, 201313 yr Why don't you read through this FAQ: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ#Why_is_my_add_in_network_card_not_working.3F and post what you get for the outputs from these commands: lsmod ethtool -i eth0 ethtool eth0 ifconfig ethtool -S eth0
March 19, 201313 yr Author Thank you for your reply. Everything seem ok but there is something that prevents connection with the network. Also I notice that the lights at the ethernet port are not blinking, both stay on (green). lsmod Module Size Used by md_mod 47078 0 xor 11590 1 md_mod sg 13487 0 e1000e 112714 0 i2c_i801 6466 0 i2c_core 13360 1 i2c_i801 coretemp 4447 0 hwmon 890 1 coretemp ahci 17138 0 libahci 14226 1 ahci ethtool -i eth0 driver: e1000e version: 1.9.5-k firmware-version: 1.8-5 bus-info: 0000:00:19.0 ethtool eth0 Settings for eth0: Supported ports: [ TP ] Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Supports auto-negotiation: Yes Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes Speed: 1000Mb/s Duplex: Full Port: Twisted Pair PHYAD: 2 Transceiver: internal Auto-negotiation: on MDI-X: on Supports Wake-on: pumbg Wake-on: g Current message level: 0x00000007 (7) Link detected: yes ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1c:c0:90:40:05 inet addr:192.168.1.3 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:20 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:2486 (2.4 KiB) Interrupt:20 Memory:e3200000-e3220000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:8 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:8 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:560 (560.0 B) TX bytes:560 (560.0 B) ethtool -S eth0 all 0
March 19, 201313 yr It looks like nothing is talking to your server (Or it can't 'hear'). Try these two items and see what happens: 1-- Type (or click on) this hyperlink into a browser window address bar: http://192.168.1.3 2-- Check the cable from the server to the switch (or router). Remove the cable at both ends and reseat. It looks like nothing is talking to your server (Or it can't 'hear').
March 19, 201313 yr Author You will not believe what caused the problem. I reboot and shutdown many times but the network was stuck. So I removed the power cable completely, waited few minutes and after I turned on the server everything works! Now the ethernet leds blink ok and already parity check is in progress. Thanks so much...

Thanks so much... Whenever you have a problem that you think a reboot is required I do a cold reboot (remove power completely press power button a few times to ensure all power is gone from MB. Then apply power again) Memory can hold its state with residual power Sent from my SGH-I727R using Tapatalk 2

Thanks so much... I have had stuck USB ports on my other PCs before. I remove the power cable (or switch the PSU off if it has a switch). I think you have to wait for a while for capacitors to discharge or something like that. The PSU on my other PC had an LED that would stay lit for nearly a minute after I pulled the plug. When it went out I new it was OK to start up again.

Thanks so much... I did have a motherboard (not my server) which just occasionally would get the network chip into a strange state, but in my case the lights were then blinking like crazy. Just like your board, a complete power off was the only solution.
