Unable to Delete Any Files From Windows 7 [SOLVED]

Featured Replies

I finally got all my files transferred over to my new server and found a couple files that I needed to delete. When I went to delete them through Windows 7 it told me I needed permission from CERBERUS\nobody to make changes to the file or folder. I have tried running the new permissions under Utils and I have tried from telnet to set new permissions. Does anyone have any ideas? I am unable to delete any files or folders on any of my disks. There are no errors appearing in my syslog, in fact there is absolutely nothing about my attempt to delete files anywhere in there. I would definitely appreciate any help though.

Login to your unRaid server (console or putty) fire up MC (Midnight Commander) and navigate to the files and delete them that way.  Unless your Windows session still has the files locked they should delete that way.  If they won't delete that way then your windows box still has the files open and a reboot of the Windows PC should free them and you can try in MC again to delete.

So the issue appears to have gotten worse by me attempting to fix the permissions. Now I am no longer able to add new files either. I would really like to figure out a way to fix this so I can manage the files from windows. Is there something in one of the config files that I need to address possibly? All my shares are set to public currently and I have no additional users configured on my server, just root.

Sorry you are beyond what I can advise you on.  I hope someone else can help you fix this as I've never encountered anything like it myself.

No problem. I appreciate the help. I had not ever used Midnight Commander. Wish I had realized how awesome it was when I was copying these files over, which I am guessing is the root cause of all my issues. If I figure out how to fix these issues I will certainly let everyone know. I was able to delete the files with Midnight Commander, but now I need to figure out what the windows issue is.

So I think the problem comes from the fact that I did not copy the files from the windows box initially. I had mounted the drives in the server and copied them from within. So my guess is that the file permissions are incorrect. Does anyone know a command I can run from telnet or console to establish full permissions for everyone on the files?

If you're on the 5.x series, run the "new permissions" script from the web management console.

I did that already, but unfortunately it did not seem to work. After I ran it I was unable to copy any files to my server. I don't understand why I am having all these issues though. I configured this server the same way as my other server, which works perfectly. The only thing I did different was to mount my drives in this server and copy files instead of doing it over the network.

Which is where the problem lies and what the "new permissions" script fixes - at least for me.  When you ran it did you wait for it to complete?  It can take a long time to complete if you have a lot of files.  Another option that was pointed out to me to use with MC was to launch it with "sudo -u nobody mc" from a command prompt (hopefully I remembered the syntax correctly).  Then MC will move the files with the same permissions as over the network.  Were you moving from NTFS drives mounted in unRAID by chance?  I could see permissions being different then if moved over the network.  I would still expect the script to fix them however.

Right I hoped the new permissions would fix it but instead it started telling me I needed permission from cerberus \nobody to perform the action. I did wait for it to complete before doing anything else. Also i did originally copy the files from mounted NTFS drives but did not use midnight commander to do so. When I look at the folder permissions in midnight commander they are correct. Its just a strange issue I guess. I was able to use midnight commander to delete my files but I will have to look into this issue more later today.

When looking in midnight commander at individual files is seems that most if not all of them are marked as read only. There are no delete privileges applied. Does anyone know an easy way to apply delete privileges aa crops all my individual files?

The permissions are not correct if the files are read-only. The New Permissions script should correct.

Any ideas why the new permissions script didn't work the last time? I saw nothing in the sys log indicating any kind of issues. I can try it again later. Hopefully it does make anything worse.

So in looking at what the new permissions script does I see why it does not fix the issue. If the file is a read only file then it just sets permissions as read only. Does anyone know a command I can enter from telnet or console that will change all file and directory permissions to read, write, delete?

I was able to fix this issue by running the following command from console.

chmod -R +rw /mnt/disk*

Where the * is the disk number. This applied read and write privileges to all files and folders recursively on the disk specified.

This may not work for everyone depending on what your security requirements are.
