I suggested the cheapest Ivy-Bridge available, as this will already be more powerfull than your existing CPU.

But you can go with any 1155 Desktop CPU that has an IGP...Ivy-Brige is preferred over SandyBridge - lower power draw when idle and lower TDP for the same Bang(Mhz) -.a Pentium G or I3 would be also very nice.

If you can afford it, a G-6120 with the DDR3-1600 RAM will offer enough headroom for running a fine assertion of plugins.;-)

Just looking for a G-6120 and I can't seem to find one anywhere. Am I missing something? lol

Maybe you mean G-2120?

...yes, I need a new pair of glasses....that proves it...I really do  ::)....G2020 or G2120 it is....sorry for the confusion

haha.. No problem. I really appreciate the help.

I think I'm going to go with the G2020 because I can't find the G6120 for a decent price compared to to the G2020.

I really just need this unraid system to have redundancy for my files and to stream movies(hi def mkv files 720p and 1080p), music and well just transfer things to it that I want to be safe. I think the G2020 will be more than enough.

...good decision, the G2020 should be more than capable.

You do have backups, don't you  ;)

...tell us how things will work out,,when your build is ready.

I'm actually thinking about switching the CPU to the i3-3220. Going to use the board you suggested with 4 gigs of ram and the Seasonic SSR-360GP psu. Is this going to be a good system to get my going for awhile? Will the psu be good enough to continue to add more drives to as I find them on sale?

PSU: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151117

RAM: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145339

CPU: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116775

MB: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157329

If I should go back to getting the G2020 and a better psu than I would do that if needed. Right now I'm around $350 for all of this and I don't want to go any higher. I still have to buy a couple of drives as well.

Thanks again for all the help!

The Seasonic is rated at 360W total and 30A on 12V....this is simply awesome.

Deduct 2-4A for mobo, CPU, RAM, unRAID Stick and a controller and you still have 26A left...good for 13 drives (2A each, even for the 3TB/4TB Seagate Barracudas 7200.14)...maybe 14 drives.

That i3 is an awesome little worker....be prepared to do more with it, because it can...so be prepared to get more RAM. ;)

Another 2 modules will draw more power...maybe get a cheaper 2x4GB kit now, like: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428 for +$10CDN

I went ahead and ordered the 2/2gigs(before I read your post) so don't think I can change that now. I kind of wish I waited. lol.. da well...

I'm sure 4gigs will do the trick for me for awhile. For starters I just want to back things up and stream. As I get comfortable with unraid I will try to do other things with it.

What is the most number of hard drives you see yourself using? That will determine whether or not that PSU is enough.

As for the CPU, what do you foresee yourself doing on the server besides storing/serving files? Running a lot of plugins? Transcoding bluray video on the fly to more than one device at a time? If so then you may want to go for the i3-3220. If you only think you will likely only run a few plugins and transcode video on the fly to a single device at once then you can save the money and go for the G2020.

I ended up getting the i3-3220. I got a bit of a combo deal when buying the board. I figure I'll eventually start doing stuff with plugins so this system should do the job for awhile.

I plan on starting with 3 drives (2X3TB and one 2TB) and I will add drives as I can afford them. By the time I use up all 8 sata ports on this drive I will likely be building a new system.
