May 7, 201313 yr Hello guyz, I am on version 5.0-rc12a of unraid, and just installed perl package and hamachi-2.0.1.15-i686-unRAID.tgz I can see my server connected on the logmein network form the logmein website. But when i connect to hamachi logmein application from a remote windows machine, i cannot see the unraid server on the list, and therefore i cannot browse server's files or visit server's web gui.. Can anyone please help? Thank you
May 8, 201313 yr If you control the UnRAID system remotely, it's the same as being at the Linux console of the UnRAID machine. This is NOT where you go to use the Web GUI or to access the files via Explorer ... although you could access the files via the appropriate Linux commands. It sounds like what you really want to do is use LogMeIn to access one of the other machines on your network, and then access the Web GUI and/or Windows Explorer to access UnRAID normally.
May 8, 201313 yr Author I want to have direct VPN connection to the server and have access to the web gui as well as browse files of server, without having to connect to any other machine on the network. How can i achieve that?

How can i achieve that? An actual VPN server. I don't know if anyone makes a VPN server plugin for unraid. What kind of router do you have? You may be able to set it up on your router.
May 8, 201313 yr Author I have a linksys ea4500. It hasn't a built in vpn server and it cannot be flashed with DD-WRT/tomato.. hm.. How come there's no vpn plugin for unraid? I mean hasnt there been anyone in need of remote management of his unraid system? Is there any other solution? I asked about hamachi logmein VPN solution, because i saw this thread http://www.hifivision.com/home-theater-pc-htpc-media-pc/28439-part-ii-sam9s-nas-project-powered-unraid.html where this guy explains how to make a vpn connection to server with hamachi logmein (hub-and-spoke network)

How can i achieve that? The details in the thread you linked to apparently allow you to set up a VPN by installing the Himachi VPN server on UnRAID and a Himachi VPN client on a Windows machine in the network where you want to connect to UnRAID. You still connect to UnRAID through a Windows machine -- there is no direct access to it any other way. The only difference from "normal" access is the Windows client can be anywhere on the internet -- not just on a local network with the UnRAID system. I haven't done this -- but the instructions seem fairly straightforward -- just be VERY patient and follow them exactly. Personally, I find it much simpler to just connect via LogMeIn to one of my Windows machines at home and access the UnRAID servers that way -- that also has the advantage that I can connect to either of my UnRAID servers remotely without the need to have both running some form of remote access client.
May 8, 201313 yr You could get a $35 Raspberry Pi and install a VPN server on that. That's what I did. Now I have no ports opened to the outside world except the VPN server port.
May 8, 201313 yr Author Thank you all for your answers. Isn't there any other way to have direct vpn connection to unraid server, without buying extra hardware or have another machine in the network switched on?
May 8, 201313 yr Author or if not with vpn, is there any other way/protocol/app i can connect remotely to my unraid server, even less secure?
May 8, 201313 yr If you're using ESXi compatible hardware, you could install ESXi; install UnRAID in a VM running under it (with the disks using pass-through); and then install a client OS in another VM. Then you could log in remotely to the client OS (using LogMeIn); and access UnRAID in the normal way, using a browser on that OS. That way you just have one physical machine running

The only downside is the disk you are using to host the VM will never spin down.

Have you tried it with mesh? Do you need hub-and-spoke?

May 8, 201313 yr thank u guyz i will try it when i find more time. u mean install ESXi in unraid or on a windows machine? Neither. ESXi is a Type 1 hypervisor -- it runs on bare metal. You install virtual machines to run under its control. You DO need to have hardware that can run ESXi ... but as long as that's true, you can install UnRAID in one virtual machine [Lots of threads in this forum detailing how to do that]; and then you can install Windows (or Linux, or whatever) in another virtual machine. You can then remotely access the 2nd (Windows) virtual machine remotely, and use it to load the Web GUI, access the UnRAID shares, etc.
May 9, 201313 yr Author I managed to make it work via hamachi logmein mesh network setup. ESXi seems quite interesting but i will get my hands on it when i add more ram (currently only 2gb). thank u all!
