[SOLVED] Removing an empty hard drive from array

Featured Replies

I have a hard drive that I would like to remove from my array (and not replace with another drive).

I have moved everything off the drive so it is now empty, what do I do next?

Remove the drive and the select the New Config utility.

FIRST you should run a parity check to confirm everything's okay.

Once you remove the drive and do a "New Config" you won't have parity until it rebuilds your parity disk.

... you'd hate to find out AFTER you've done this that one of your other drives has a problem  :)

(and Murphy does have a way !!)

Specific steps depend on your version of unRAID, but basically you need to set a new disk configuration and then the array will re--calculate parity when you next start it based on the new disk configuration.

In any case,  FIRST do a parity check on the existing configuration, expect no disk errors in the syslog.  Then...

1. Stop the array

2. Un-assign the disk to be removed

3. Set a new disk configuration

on 5.X under Utils->New Configuration  (click on the button)

on 4.7 log on via telnet or on the system console, type

    newconfig

respond to its prompt with "Yes"  (capital "Y", lower case "es")

4. Start the array.  (it will then calculate parity on the new disk configuration)

Thank you for the step-by-step, I will start with a parity check, then assuming everything is OK, proceed with the steps outlined.

Thank you everyone!
