Add new drives and upgrade to 5.0 Questions

Featured Replies

I have had 4.7 Pro running for about 2 years with very little trouble.  I am thinking about adding a 2TB Parity drive and adding a 2TB drive to the mix.  I also want to upgrade to 5.0.

Should I upgrade to 5.0 first ? Or Should I add the new drives first ?  I am thinking upgrading to 5.0 first is the way to go.  I am nervous about doing this though...

It doesn't really matter whether you upgrade first or upgrade to a 2TB parity first.

HOWEVER ... regardless of what you do, FIRST run a current parity check to confirm all is okay.

Next, before upgrading to v5, I'd suggest you wait just a few days/weeks for v5 "final" to be released.  It's been a long time coming;  but it's clearly going to be released SOON (I hesitate to predict exactly when; but Limetech is advertising new servers to be delivered next month which will include v5, so it's safe to assume it won't be long).

Finally, if you're going to upgrade to v5, you may want to wait until then before upgrading your parity drive; and using a larger (3TB or 4TB) drive for parity, so you can use data drives that size as well.

If you're not interested in the larger drives (e.g. perhaps you've already bought the drives), you could go ahead and upgrade now to the 2TB drives.  There's no disadvantage to doing so -- just be sure you have "MBR-4K aligned" as the default partition format on the Settings page (In the Disk Settings section)

Upgrade, make sure everything is working fine, then start replacing drives.

I would run a couple parity checks, etc before adding/changing drives.

Just make sure to follow all the upgrade instructions.

Thanks... I will wait for the stable V5 to be released.  Then I will upgrade, then add the new drives.  I will look into a larger drive like 3 or 4 TB so I can then add larger drives as needed.  In the meantime I will do some parity checks as I had not done one in a while.

As a 4.7 Pro user will I need to pay a upgrade fee for v5?

No, the upgrade is free.

wow, thats pretty amazing.  unraid is awesome.

I will probably stick with 2 TB drives to keep cost in check when I upgrade.

I understand completely.  I doubt I'll even bother to upgrade my main media server with any > 2TB drives -- it's got 24TB and still has enough space for at least another couple years.  It's rock-solid on v4.7, so there's no real reason to upgrade it.

My 2nd server (used for other purposes) has all 3TB drives, so it's clearly running v5 (RC12a at the moment).

While there ARE a few nice changes in v5, if you don't need > 2TB drive support there's really no compelling reason to upgrade.

any reason NOT to use WD Green 2TB  drive with 4.7 ?  They are 99 bucks at new eggers.

They're fine.  Personally, I only buy the Red series drives these days -- they use less power than the Greens (4.4w vs. 6w); have a longer warranty (3 yrs vs 2); and aren't a lot more.  In fact, Newegg had the 2TB Reds on sale for about $100 just a couple weeks ago (I don't recall the exact price, as I don't buy drives that small these days).    You can get the 2TB Reds for $110 here: http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=HD-W20EFRX

But in my older UnRAID media server I have 14 of the WD Greens still happily humming away  :)

(most of them are 2TB drives)
