May 28, 201313 yr Hi! This is my first unraid and esxi build. Could you please look over my components to see if I have forgotten anything. In adition to the 3 reds I have another 2x 2tb hd's with data and 1x 2tb empty hd just sitting around. I will be running 3-4 vms in addition to unraid with sabnzbd, sickbeard and couch potato. Did I miss anything and will that PSU be enough? Any recommendations? -Thanks anoobis LIAN LI PC-A04B Black Aluminum MicroATX Mini Tower Computer Case Item #: N82E16811112316 3x Western Digital Red WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Item #: N82E16822236343 SeaSonic SSR-450RM 450W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply Item #: N82E16817151124 SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O LGA 1155 Intel C204 Micro ATX Intel Xeon E3 Server Motherboard Item #: N82E16813182253 2x Kingston 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 ECC Unbuffered Server Memory w/TS Model KVR16E11/8 Item #: N82E16820239370 Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 69W Quad-Core Server Processor BX80637E31230V2 Item #: N82E16819117286
May 28, 201313 yr Hardware looks good. I'm assuming you are planning to use one or more of those other disks you mentioned as a datastore for ESXi? Also, I'd go with at least 16GB to start if you plan to run 4 to 5 VMs. EDIT: Do yourself a favor and run SAB/cp/SB in a separate ubuntu or similar VM instead of running them as a plugin in unraid.
May 28, 201313 yr no pass-thru card You can get away without any additional drives, but do you mean to? Sure, you can boot ESX from flash, and then boot unRAID from flash, and then use unRAID for the datastore to load additional VMs. once you decide on the card and any additional drives, considered the required cables. forward breakout/reverse breakout/etc

May 28, 201313 yr Author The idea was to use all 6 sata ports on the mobo first and then get a pass thru card later when I needed more storage. Do you guys for see this being a problem?

Yes, I don't think you can pass through motherboard ports (Someone who runs ESXi can confirm that -- but I'm pretty sure it's true)

Yes, I don't think you can pass through motherboard ports (Someone who runs ESXi can confirm that -- but I'm pretty sure it's true) Correct. I use my MB ports for Datastore drives. Any other drives are RDM'd through. If you pass through the MB ports you no longer have any for Datastore drives which are required. Also I believe I read where someone tried to use a 2 port ESXi supported card for the Datastore drives and pass through the MB controller but it didn't work - it wouldn't boot ESXi and/or the VMs when using the 2 port card. Use the KISS principle and just use the MB ports for Datastore drives and purchase a card for unRAID.
May 29, 201313 yr Could you guys recommend a pass thru card then? IBM M1015. Tons of people on here use them. I've got 2. Check eBay for a deal.
May 30, 201313 yr M1015, flashed to IT mode which makes it an LSI SAS 9220-8i Buying the IBM RAID card is a cheap way to get the SAS card.
