June 8, 201313 yr Can anyone recommend a util to compare the files I have on a backup drive on my Windows box to the files I have on the array. Also is there program other than teracopy for copying large amounts from Windows to the array. I quite like teracopy but when I have been copying from my backup drive to the array teracopy chokes on files with a path/name longer than 256 characters, though this may be a windows or linux issue. Also teracopy is not the most helpful, well at least not he free version, when it comes to failed transfers. I have just transferred 20,000+ files and it reports 5 have failed but seemingly gives me no way to find out WHICH five failed without scrolling through all 20,000. Any suggestions/ideas?
June 9, 201313 yr Author Hi, Thanks for that. However I downloaded it and it crashes when I try to compare, mscomct2.ocx error. It seems to indicate that this is not registered. So I registered it in admin mode still no joy. I am using 64bit Winows 7 BTW, what are you using?
June 9, 201313 yr Teracopy gives you a log of every file it processed. Its actually quite easy to tell what failed. I would do it with powershell. Heres a script that will work. http://philergia.wordpress.com/2011/07/28/comparing-multiple-files-using-powershell/
June 9, 201313 yr I've never had any issues with FolderMatch => my "normal" system is Win7x64, but I've also run it in Win7x32, Vista x32 and x64, and XP ... all without issue. Have you run Windows Update to confirm all of your C libraries are up-to-date? You can manually register MSCOMCT2.OCX as follows: => Copy MSCOMCT2.OCX file to c:\windows\sysWOW64 [ NOT to C:\windows\system32 ] => Open a Command Prompt in Administrative Mode [All Programs - Accessories; then right-click on "Command Prompt" and choose "Run as Administrator"] => Type the following command and press Enter: regsvr32 c:\windows\sysWOW64\mscomct2.ocx I've tried a lot of different compare utilities, but always come back to FolderMatch. I generally copy new data to the array using TeraCopy, so it's checked initially when I copy it; but as my backup disks fill up, I always run a FolderMatch between that disk and the array before storing the backup, to double-check that all is well. FolderMatch can also be used to do some of the same functions TeraCopy does (sync folders, etc.) ... but I only use it for my compares -- the task that it really excels at.
June 10, 201313 yr Author Teracopy gives you a log of every file it processed. Its actually quite easy to tell what failed. I would do it with powershell. If so I do not seem to be able to sort it so that all the failed transfers are together, finding 5 failures in amongst 20,000+ is "tricky" or am I missing something here?
June 10, 201313 yr I had tried registering it and no joy. You may have a bad download => try re-downloading FolderMatch. As I noted above, I've used this for years on EVERY recent version of Windows, both 32 and 64 bits, and it works perfectly every time. I've currently got it install on systems using XP, Windows 7 Ultimate x32, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (my main system), Windows 8 Pro x32, and Windows 8 Pro x64 => and it works just fine on all of them.
