[SOLVED] Slow Array Mounting

Featured Replies

Hi,

i updated to the latest rc-13 and filled up my array with data from an old backup drive (1.5 TB: videos, music, lot of pictures, time machine).

Now the array needs nearly 15-20min to start (mount) and on first time boot-up (the array will auto start) the webinterface does not respond.

I think the syslog looks fine...

Is there anything i can do?

Kind regards

Demokan

Hardware:

Mainboard: ASUS P8H77-I

Prozessor: Intel Core i3-3220T

RAM: 8GB Corsair

Parity: 3 TB Hitachi

Data1: 3 TB Hitachi

Do you have a monitor attached to your UnRAID box?    If not, connect one.

Then watch the initial boot and see if (a) the bizroot/bizimage files are loading quickly and the time involved is in actual Linux initializations; or (b) the bizroom/bizimage files are loading S.L.O.W.L.Y ==> this can happen if for some reason your USB flash drive is read at USB v1 rates.    Shouldn't happen on any modern board; but can ... and the "solution" is often to simply use another USB port  (which will likely require "fiddling" in the BIOS to get the boot device set correctly).

Thanks I tried that.

The image loads in seconds (4s) and the complete boot (incl. plex) needs 30s.

I even tried to change the USB port and the 4GB RAM limit.

Starting to the maintain mode works fine.

But no change of the mounting speed...

But I recognized the drives making a reading/writing noise while the array is not started.

Should I check some SMART status or Hitachi firmware updates?

So the long time interval you're referring to is from the time you click Start on the Web GUI until the array is actually ready ??

Yes.

Spinning up all drives...

Start array...

Mounting disks... <- this needs 30-60min to proceed and the webinterface does not respond

Restart SMB...

Start AFP...

After the array is mounted and ready everything works fine.

EDIT:

I installed a HDD LED and noticed periodically reads & writes on both disks (every 6s).

The webinterface read/writer counter is also counting.

And if i spindown the discs they will immediately spinup.

Is there any correlation to my imported data? I used the Wiki Transferring Files guide...

... and this is with only ONE data disk plus parity !!???

I can't think of ANYTHING that would cause this to run this slowly with the possible exception of both drives being accessed in PIO mode [VERY unlikely] or a hung network protocol.  (and even then I wouldn't think it would take 30-60 minutes !!)

Disable any add-ons you're running and all of the protocols except SMB and see if that makes a difference.

All plugins (its just plex) are already disabled.

Both drives Parity and Data are 3 TB Hitachi (Hitachi_HDS5C3030BLE630). They are new and just used for unRAID. Before first use i precleard both drives (1 times) with no errors.

Are you cleanly stopping the array before shutting the server down?  I can see it taking a long time replaying the file-system-journals if you do not shut down cleanly.  (as long as 30 minutes or more)  This would be noted in the system log though.

As far as disk accesses, it sounds like something is using your disks.  Install the inotifywatch package to learn what is using them.

AFP deactivated - no improvement

In webinterface: Stopping the array and then power down

or using the console via telnet: powerdown

I am setting up the inotify watches for my data drive (/mnt/disk1). This will take a while.

The webinterface says the array is not mounted jet. But i can already access to the array data via console... (/mnt/disk1 and /mnt/user)

The webinterface says the array is not mounted jet. But i can already access to the array data via console... (/mnt/disk1 and /mnt/user)

The unRAID web interface does not refresh itself.  If you can access the data, the disks are mounted.

Okay good to know!

So if i try to refresh the interface, it still says "Mounting disks..."

I can access via terminal , but not over AFP oder SMB. (only the flash drive works)

This line in the syslog seems VERY WRONG.  I think your "plex" is improperly configured.

changing owner of /mnt/disk1 from nobody to unraid-plex

all disks should be owned by "nobody"  (you can probably do as you please with sub-directories)

The delays in starting were all in the set up and configuration of "afp"

Jun 10 17:06:36 demoserver afpd[1947]: dsi_stream_read: len:0, unexpected EOF"

I'd find a better implementation.

It seems to be stopping the array and delaying everything.

So what can i do now? What do you advise me?

  • Author

I did the following things:

- cleared all "Apple" files (.DS_Store, .AppleD*, .apdisk, Temporary Items, Network Trash Folder)

- checked the array with reiserfsck (no errors found)

- new permissions via utils page

- deactivated all shares /  plugins

- restored the "go" file (thanks dgaschk)

- finally did a parity check (no errors found)

The array now mounts in regular speed.

But i have still unknown reading/writing on the array. lsof looks normal and notifywait (-mr /mnt) shows nothing.

Upgrade to RC14

Thank you all!

I updated to rc14 and the read/write issues are gone. The array works fine!

But the Plex plugin will still not work with its old configuration.

If i reset the Plex config file, it starts with a new library and works.

The old Path was: /mnt/disk1

Should i change the Plex Path?

I read something in the Plex forums about that ( http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/65860-transport-endpoint-is-not-connected/ ).
