June 17, 201313 yr Hi, I am very new to unRAID. I am wanting to plan my User Shares and Split Levels correctly for use with XBMC My File Structure Movies --> Jaws --> Jaws2 --> King Kong TV --> Lost --> Season 1 --> Season 2 --> Season 3 TV --> The Big Bang Theory --> Season 1 --> Season 2 --> Season 3 Photos - Not too sure how to structure these... any suggestions? Music -- Not too sure how to structure these... any suggestions? My Shares Are the shares below correct? Movies Split at Level 1 - So Movies is recreated on each disk, but each individual movie folder is on one disk only. TV Split Level 2 - So TV and TV Show folders are created on each disk, each season is on one disk only. Photos -- Any suggestion on how to structure photos/folders? Music-- Any suggestion on how to structure photos/folders? Any help greatly appreciated.... Thanks
June 17, 201313 yr First, split levels are far less important than you might think. The only time UnRAID will switch to another disk is when it's allocation method (high-water, fill-up, most-free, etc.) says it's time to do so. Except for most-free, which will cause frequent changes in disk choice, the others don't result in very much switching between disks, so even if you had NO control over the split levels, you'd have very few folders with split contents. Having said that, split levels DO let you control how content might be split ... but your numbers are one too low in each case. Use 2 for Movies, 3 for TV Shows .. the high-level folder "counts", so you need to include it when considering the correct number.

The numbers are correct if the shares being exposed are Movies, TV, etc. but are one too low if you have a top level share called something like Media that contains the Movies, TV, etc shares In terms of the other media types, then a good starting point might be Music->Artist->Albums (to keep each artist constrained to a single disk) Photos->Year->photos with split levels of 2 if these are top level shares, and 3 otherwise. If you have very big collections of media then you might want to add an additional level to help with navigation such as Movies->X->Movie Name where X is a letter to sub-divide the media further. I do this for my Movies, TV, and Music shares. I use my media in conjunction with playing devices such as Apple TV that slows down if I navigate folders containing a very large number of entries. For my Movies share I have another folder called YEAR that contains a folder for each year I have any Movies for that contains a symbolic link to those files filed by the Letter->Moviename structure. I populate this by running a script that assumes each movie title contains the year in brackets as part of its name. This is of particular help with finding the more recent films.
June 17, 201313 yr Author Great, thanks... What is the logic in having a top level folder like Media?
June 17, 201313 yr Great, thanks... What is the logic in having a top level folder like Media? Allows a single share point of access to all files. Also uses a single set of security settings with no easy way to separate out permissions for different files / users. Whether that is an advantage or disadvantage depends on your specific situation.
