Shutting down server causing cable modem to hang

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

My problem seems very odd and I really have no idea where to start. I would really like to shutdown my unraid server at night to save on power, but if I shut my server off, my cable modem hangs after an hour or two. There are two ways I can get the internet up and running again, 1) turn the server back on, 2) power cycle the cable modem. I called Time Warner Cable and they instructed me that I could have a port being closed on the server which is causing the port to get closed on the cable modem. Unfortunately, they weren't much help and I don't really understand enough about ports to know how this could be a problem.

For some more info about my setup, I have a cable modem running into an Airport Extreme router. Then I have the server connected to the Airport Extreme by ethernet. I use the Airport Extreme to set a static ip for the server so I can always connect using my Boxee. I am able to reboot any of my other computers without having this issue. It is only a problem with the unraid server.

Any help would be so greatly appreciated!

I just realized I probably need to specify a bit more. When I shut the server down, none of my other devices can access the internet over WiFi or Ethernet. All the connections appear as though they're working just fine. The light on my Airport Extreme is green, but in Airport Utility the light for the Internet is Yellow.

Describe your network and how everything is connected.

Server is hooked up by ethernet to my Airport Extreme. Airport Extreme is hooked up to the cable modem by ethernet.

This is an odd one! I think you're going to have to analyze what your different devices IP settings are, paying particular attention to each device's (Default) Gateway address. In unRAID you get the settings from entering "ifconfig" at the command prompt. Your router's address is 10.0.1.1 and that should be the gateway for all your devices.

It would seem, the way you describe it, as the unRAID server is acting like a proxy or gateway for the other devices on your network. I don't see any indication of that in your log other than you are running ifplugd, which I know nothing about.

Perhaps I've overlooked something in your log. It makes more sense to me to focus your attention on the settings within your router. Apple gave you a HUGE subnet to use. Your unRAID server could be set with a fixed IP that would (probably) NEVER conflict with an address handed out by the DHCP of the Airport.

It will be interesting to see what is causing this issue! Good Luck!!

Anything showing in the logs on the AirPort Extreme? I use this same router so I know it's not a problem with the router unless there is something wrong with your particular router. Have you tried hooking something up directly to the cable modem when this problem occurs to see if the problem is with the router or the modem?

I see nothing in the syslog and with the way you describe the setup unRAID is not directly responsible.  Best guess is how the airport extreme is configured.  I don't know Apple stuff so hopefully an Apple person will chime in.

Here are some screenshots of my Airport Extreme settings. Wasn't really sure which ones you would be interested in, so I just snapped some screenshots of the important ones.

From a glance those settings look ok. I was looking for actual event logs from the router though. Are you using the latest firmware for the AirPort Extreme?

Did you try plugging something directly into the cable modem when this occurs to see if you are able to reach the web that way? Important to know to tell if this is a router problem or modem problem.

Can you open the network.cfg file in TextEdit and post the contents here? The file is on the unraid flash drive in the config folder.

Lastly, it looks like you have Time Warner Cable and live in Kansas City. Don't you live in a neighborhood Google Fiber has been deployed in yet? If you live in a "fiberhood" and haven't switched you're crazy!

Here's my network.cfg file. I'll try to test if going around the airport extreme fixes the problem. I'm pretty sure it won't though b/c to get everything back up and running after this happens I need to power cycle the cable modem, not the router.

As for Google Fiber, oh I'm definitely signed up. They already started installation in my Fiberhood, they just haven't gotten to our building yet. Can't wait!!!

I have no idea...how would I check?

Could you post your workstation's IP settings? Maybe it's easier to  post a screen shot from the network section of your settings showing IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway. Those are really the key things to know when troubleshooting network connectivity.

Thanks for the screen shot of unRAID. Can you send one for your workstation, the computer you are using now? Thanks!

My iMac currently connects over WiFi to my Airport Extreme. Same network connectivity issue occurs over ethernet as well when the server shuts down. Here are the network settings I think you're looking for from my iMac.

The workstation shot looks good; I can't see a problem with your settings. The gateway address is that of your router and that should work. The next problem area might be the DNS settings. Could you screen shot that tab or just post what your DNS is set for?

Beyond that the next thing to try is the PING utility part of the Network Utility. Are you familiar with it?

Thanks!!

Here's a screenshot of my DNS settings. And as for the Network Utility app, I've never used it before, but I'm familiar with Ping and such so I'm sure I could follow some directions. Thanks for all the help...I really appreciate it!!!

Thanks for sending the screen shots. Here again, I don't see a problem.

I think the next avenue is to disconnect your unRAID server from your network (at which point as you have reported, you'll lose Internet connectivity) and then use PING to see where things stop. At first you should just ping the gateway address (your router's address) 10.0.1.1, I think it is, right? If that works then start pinging IP addresses outside your network. The  trick here is to know the IP addresses (number) of outside stuff. Google's public DNS servers are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and they should answer. www.apple.com is 184.51.237.15 and that responds to ping. The point is we're using numbers and not names.

If you get responses from pings then your connectivity to the outside world is OK. Then you would start trying pinging names to test DNS resolution of name-to-number. www.Lime-Technology.com responds to ping. Many domains don't answer PING as a security function.

Sorry, got to go....I'm at work today. All the best!
