October 9, 200619 yr I have been reorginizing my files. I have moved many files from one drive and placed them on another drive. Is there any reason to defragment drives ever? If so how can this be done?
October 9, 200619 yr Good question. In general, defrag programs don't exist for linux. You would have to copy the files to a blank disk. Novell claims you never would need to defrag a ReiserFS file system. Obviously the main concern is whether fragmentation can lead to video studdering, and I just don't know the answer to that.
October 10, 200619 yr I know that on XP I alway format the drive with 64k cluster sizes for video storage. The larger cluster sizes protect against defragmented files. I've been doing this for XP for the last 3 years or so and have never had issues. Prior to this change I would get fragment causes glitches. I thought I read somewhere that ReiserFS uses a dynamic cluster size? Maybe I'm off in left field. I remember looking into this when I first go the UnRaid becuase I wanted to see if there was a way to use the 64k cluster sizes for UnRaid.
