Unraid 5.12 flash became read only

Featured Replies

I am running unraid 5.12 pro and for some reason, the flash drive became read only.

I am unable to change the "go" file any more and I keep seeing messages like this in my log:

Jul 30 10:49:47 Tower kernel: md: could not write superblock from /boot/config/super.dat

or

Jul 30 10:50:08 Tower tvheadend[1993]: settings: Unable to create "/boot/custom/tvh/dvbmuxes/_dev_dvb_adapter1_Samsung_S5H1411_QAM_8VSB_Frontend/_dev_dvb_adapter1_Samsung_S5H1411_QAM_8VSB_Frontend575028615.tmp" - Read-only file system

Please help....

Run Windows Check Disk on the drive

Sent from a phone, sorry for any typos

just a quick note, flash drives can become read only just before they fail, if i were you i would copy everything off the key asap. then do as sureguy says and run a windows chkdsk on the usb key to fix any possible corruption

one other thing to check is some usb keys have a physical switch on the side that can put them in read only mode, just make sure you haven't knocked the switch

Thanks, this worked (referring to the scanning and fixing on PC computer)!

Would be nice if there was a message in syslog to indicate corruption was found on the system drive.

Hypothetically, if my USB drive fails, do I need to purchase the software again?

Just email Tom at limetech and explain what happened.  Most likely you will just have to provide him the GUID of a new (non-blacklisted) USB drive and he will transfer your license to the new drive.

or buy yourself a usb card reader and then you dont need to worry about failure, as the guid is from the usb card reader and not the memory card :-), of course you could still have a failure of the card reader but this is much less likely, you also dont need to worry about writes "wearing" the usb device out as its easily replaced.

this is what i have, and quite a few other unraiders also:-

You uncannily predicted the demise of my USB flash drive...!

The log is throwing all kind of FAT read error and I/O failiures and the content of the flash drive is now gone.... Good thing I followed your advice about backing up the flash drive content....

It looks like the rest of the server is still working ok. What would be the best way of transiting to a new drive without losing data?

hi guigz, i currently have my smug face on :-), glad you did backup the contents of the usb key!!.

ok onto what you need to do:-

1. go to unraid webui and screenshot the main page showing your list of drives, you want to capture the serial number and slot for each disk, this is a just incase you need to start from a fresh install, then shutdown server.

2. buy yourself a new usb key, or even better the usb card reader i linked to and install the SAME version of unraid on it as was on your old key

3. insert new key/reader and boot server, find the guid of the new key/reader, do NOT assign any drives to any slots at this point, this is only to get the guid so you can request a new licence file, once you got the guid shutdown the server.

4. send guid to tom via email telling him that you need a replacement key as your old usb key has died, wait for new key file to be sent to you.

5. copy contents of usb key backup to new key/reader EXCLUDING the licence key file, insert key and boot server

you might find this kicks off a parity check, it depends whether you stopped the array before copying the contents of the key, if you didnt then the server will think its had a hard shutdown and thus will start a parity check

thats it, its fairly simple, you wont loose any data if you follow the above, good luck and please let me know how you get on.

Thank you very much for the help!

I have purchased a new USB drive (kingston g3 101 8gb) that should last better than my previous no-name one. I would have been interested to follow your advice about a flash reader card, but I was unable to source one locally.

I am waiting on my replacement key before I follow your directions. I will update this to let you know how it went. Thanks again for the help!
