August 3, 201312 yr I have an unraid server with five WD "green" drives. I forget the exact motherboard, but I'm using a newer motherboard (bought within last year or so) with version 4.7 of the Unraid server software. Right now, the server is costing me $10/month to run at about 17 cents/kwhr. Is there a way I can reduce this power output (without buying new hardware, since that would probably not have the return on investment)? For instance, would upgrading the unraid software provide any additional benefit in terms of power reduction?
August 3, 201312 yr No that will not work... Without changing hardware you need to keep the disks spun down as much as possible.. Do you allready run cache_dirs ? It will keep your disks spun down when browsing directories.. You can also think of keeping your newer files together on one disk, chances are that that will be the disk that will spin up.. With newer stuff on more drives more drives will spin up. You can think of adding a cache drive, that way when writing files no disks will spin up but data will only be written once a day.. Make that disk an SSD for even more savings..(power wise... the ssd will cost money and probably more then you will save in electricity)
August 3, 201312 yr The only way to save a meaningful amount of power is to shut down the machine whenever possible.
