August 26, 201312 yr I need some help...it seems like all of a sudden my USB drive is no longer bootable. I saw another thread that had the same problem...and the solution was to go into the bios and make sure that the USB was set to be the first device...in my instance ...it no longer was(not sure why it reset itself)....so I rebooted...it went through the bios and then said: "Reboot and select proper media device or insert media and press any key" I have the supermicro unofficial motherboard...I am able to read the usb drive on a windows machine and have made .zip backup of the contents. Any suggestions on how to proceed? Thanks, Dan
August 26, 201312 yr I have had similar problems with my Asus. For some reason it thinks that the flash drive is a hard drive. If you can, try to change the bootable device to 'hard drive', but leave the flash drive as the boot device.
August 26, 201312 yr ...............I have the supermicro unofficial motherboard... You'd better help me out here....what model SM board is that? It would also help to know what version of unRAID you have been using. I am able to read the usb drive on a windows machine and have made .zip backup of the contents. You could try running CHKDSK e: (or whatever letter the USB drive mounts as) from a COMMAND prompt on your windows machine. There's also the MAKE_BOOTABLE.bat file on the USB drive that you can run to verify the USB drive is in fact bootable. Hopefully it will be an easy fix! Thanks!
August 26, 201312 yr Author Unraid 4.7 Super Micro C2SEE I did run make_bootable.bat and it was the same results. So I have confirmed that it is definitely a bios issue....by hitting F11 on boot...it pulls the list of devices and I can select the flash drive by name Lexar Firefly... and unraid boots sucessfully. I am confused as this machine's bios has been set for years and rebooted several times and this has never been an issue. I seem to recall that in the bios the flash drive was select able by name (Lexar...) as the boot device...no where can I see this device name in the bios...the only choice is removable media. At least I have a workaround...so I am happy! Dan
August 26, 201312 yr Thanks for the info on the mobo! I had a similar issue on an Intel board and now I can't remember what finally fixed it. No matter, it's probably a much different BIOS than you have! It's odd that it changed like that. Hopefully you'll get a hit from another C2SEE user on what exactly the fix is. I'll do some hunting for the wascally wabbit!
August 26, 201312 yr .......I'll do some hunting for the wascally wabbit! The quick hit was this thread on the forum: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5084.0 Which pointed out Emulation Type: FORCED FDD However it was also noted to disable IDE in BIOS I also came across this this thread http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=3517.0;nowap which suggest you might also need to move the USB disk to the rear panel AND there may be issues booting from USB if more than 12 drives (maybe 11?) attached. I hope that helps!
August 28, 201312 yr Author Doorunrun, Thanks for the links....I think I have the USB issue fixed...now my parity drive failed....running smart reports now. Dan
