August 28, 201312 yr recently i purchase it and i don't know how can configure to act as IT mode. Could you please help me. thanks in advance.
August 28, 201312 yr holy cow, that thing must have cost a fortune... Wow, want to use it with unRAID? You must have good reasons to take a 24-port card...mind sharing? http://forums.freenas.org/threads/confused-about-that-lsi-card-join-the-crowd.11901/ At that price you surely can expect some support from LSI. Hopefully they can give you a hint what to do. I would not risk bricking that damn thing by trying to crossflash it. Perhaps unRAID supports it out of the box? Did you try? I will follow this thread, will be interesting to read your experience. I found only one or two more threads dealing with such monster cards. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=27671.0
August 29, 201312 yr Based on details at Newegg it is a SAS2108 with a built in SAS expander. Newegg features: I/O Processor/SAS Controller: LSISAS2108 RAID on Chip (ROC) and LSISAS2x36 Expander Twenty-four port internal/four-port external SATA+SAS solution for internal drive storage and external JBOD expansion using up to 240 SAS and/or SATA devices. My M1015 is a SAS2008 controller which DOES work with unRAID (when flashed to IT mode like you want). I don't know if the SAS2108 does but it seem like it would be a possibility. Sorry I can't help you with flashing it.
August 29, 201312 yr You need to go to the LSI website and see if there is an IT flash rom to start with Sent from my GT-N7105T using Tapatalk 4

August 29, 201312 yr I doubt that it can be cross flashed...it *is* a real Raid-controller, with on-board RAM and all, not a low-end HBA with *real* Raid-FW like the M1016 M1015 and others we are talking about here. You have agood chance to seriously brick it on that attempt. Are you in need to support that many ports with a singlke PCIe slot? ....getting a M1015 + a RES2CV36 will deliver the same connections on a single slot. I'd sell the LSI and get the two separate items instead...maybe you can even make deal and end up with some money left.

September 1, 201312 yr ...oups...no glasses ...M1015 it is indeed. I am not able to recommend others, since I am using only these for all my Software-Raid Filers, like also with ZFS. These are not hard to source (although prices have gone high since word is out and now everybody wants one) and they work perfectly with the Intel RES2SV240/RES2CV240 and RES2CV360 expanders.

September 2, 201312 yr Author Which way is the better, To use two card from M1015 or use one card from M1015 along with intel expanders. what is the different matter of speed or transfer speed.
September 2, 201312 yr ...the IBM ServeRAID M1015, or M1015 in short, is a LSI 2008 6GB/s, 8 port card. It is a OEM version of the LSI 9240-8i and it comes with a OEM version of the Full-Raid FW, but it can be cross flashed to a 9211-8i (or 9210-8i which it resembles technically) HBA with original LSI IT FW. See: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=12767.msg121131#msg121131 These cards became so popular, since they are entry level cards, shipped as standard with IBM System x models, but allmost all enterprise customers are pulling them out and replace these, so they hit the market as brand new but at a reasonable price. You can combine the card with a 36-port expander, like the Intel RES2CV360, which would leave you with 28 usable ports. These expanders can be mounted in your chassis and will be powered by a 12V-molex connector from your PSU...no PCIe slot needed. Your actual card is build the same, but as an "all-in-one",8-port controller chip plus 36-port expander on one PCB. You could also go for a REC2CV240 expander (24ports), connect only one 8087 slot (4-ports) of the M105, which will give you 20 ports at a slightly reduced bandwidth (which would not matter much with unRAID) and one 8087 slot (4-ports) left at full speed, still giving you 24-ports. That's what I use in one of my ZFS boxes...running stable since 1.5 years now. See this discussion for info: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=21769.0 I believe that a M1015 plus one RES2CV240 or RES2CV360 combo will be possibly cheaper than the card you currently have....but it will work with unRAID and all other software raid options, like ZFS, where a Full-Raid-Card is of no use.
September 2, 201312 yr Which way is the better, To use two card from M1015 or use one card from M1015 along with intel expanders. For 24 ports you'll need three M1015s...this will be chaeper, but it will consume more power and you will need the PCIe slots for these...all x8 bandwidth in order to get full speed. As said, IMHO you won't see a noticable performance decrease in real world with an expander....not with unRAID, which always cannot deliver more throughput on write as that of a single disk.

Yepp..over here, I can get *two* combos ( 1x M1015 + 1x RES2CV360) for the price of *one* 9280-24i4e

September 2, 201312 yr My plan to use 20 harddisk so if use 16 port from two of M1015 and the remaning from motherboard sata connection, itsgoing to work with unraid??? This will work fine, if you have the PCIe slot available. otherthing is if i bought the m1015 does require to do some modification on it or it just change the mode to IT. ...this is not a "mode" in the sense of a bios setting. it is a bios change...you need to re-flash the card. With the M1015 it is a cross-flash, something that was not intended to work or being supported by the manufacturer. So there is a risk involved that you can brick it during the process. This is only to be performed once...after that the card will act as a HBA and BIOS upgrades work like normal (flash, not cross-flash). Some sellers offers these cards pre-(cross-)flashed with IT or IR...you'll want IT. Edit: ...and yes, no electrical modifications involved, like soldering wires or such...only software modification. Edit2: if you don't want to go through that process, go for a "real" LSI 9211-8i instead of the M1015, but they will be as twice as expensive as a M1015 Edit3: ...the 16-port all-in-one with IT mode available as stock FW is this: http://www.lsi.com/products/storagecomponents/Pages/LSISAS9201-16i.aspx
